Identification and description of Ditylenchus arachis from Codonopsis pilosula in Gansu Province

NI Chunhui,LI Huixia,LIU Yonggang,HAN Bian,SHI Mingming,WEI Xuejuan,LI Wenhao,XU Xuefen
【Objective】 To clarify the species of stem nematode from diseased sample of Codonopsis pilosula in Gansu Province. 【Method】 Species identification of stem nematode was carried out by combing morphological analysis, phylogenetic analyses of ITS-rDNA and 28S-rDNA sequences, PCR with species-specific primers as well as PCR-ITS-RFLP.【Result】 The morphological characteristics of the stem nematode population from C. pilosula in Gansu was similar to those of Ditylenchus arachis. The ranges of measureme...

New methods of removing debris and highthroughput counting of cyst nematode eggs extracted from field soil

Upender Kalwa, Christopher M. Legner, Elizabeth Wlezien, Gregory Tylka, and Santosh Pandey
The soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, is the most damaging pathogen of soybeans in the United States. To assess the severity of nematode infestations in the field, SCN egg population densities are determined. Cysts (dead females) of the nematode must be extracted from soil samples and then ground to extract the eggs within. Sucrose centrifugation commonly is used to separate debris from suspensions of extracted nematode eggs. We present a method using OptiPrep as a density gradie...

Robotic agricultural instrument for automated extraction of nematode cysts and eggs from soil to improve integrated pest management

Christopher M. Legner, Gregory L Tylka, Santosh Pandey
Soybeans are an important crop for global food security. Every year, soybean yields are reduced by numerous soybean diseases, particularly the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). It is difficult to visually identify the presence of SCN in the field, let alone its population densities or numbers, as there are no obvious aboveground disease symptoms. The only definitive way to assess SCN population densities is to directly extract the SCN cysts from soil and then extract the eggs from cysts and count the...

Scan4CFU: Low-cost, open-source bacterial colony tracking over large areas and extended incubation times

Santosh Pandey, Yunsoo Park, Ankita Ankita, Gregory J. Phillips
A hallmark of bacterial populations cultured in vitro is their homogeneity of growth, where the majority of cells display identical growth rate, cell size and content. Recent insights, however, have revealed that even cells growing in exponential growth phase can be heterogeneous with respect to variables typically used to measure cell growth. Bacterial heterogeneity has important implications for how bacteria respond to environmental stresses, such as antibiotics. The phenomenon of antimicrobia...

COVID-19 Testing and Diagnostics: A Review of Commercialized Technologies for Cost, Convenience and Quality of Tests

Ashler Benda, Lukas Zerajic, Ankita Ankita, Erin Cleary, Yunsoo Park, Santosh Pandey
Population-scale and rapid testing for SARS-CoV-2 continues to be a priority for several parts of the world. We revisit the in vitro technology platforms for COVID-19 testing and diagnostics—molecular tests and rapid antigen tests, serology or antibody tests, and tests for the management of COVID-19 patients. Within each category of tests, we review the commercialized testing platforms, their analyzing systems, specimen collection protocols, testing methodologies, supply chain logistics, and rel...

In vitro and In vivo Antiplasmodial of Stem Bark Extract of Garcinia husor

Healthy Kainama, Sri Fatmawati, Mardi Santoso, Pieter Kakisina, Taslim Ersam
Garcinia husor is one of the folk medicines in Maluku-Indonesia. This species has been used for the treatmet of Malaria disease. The phytochemical contents and antiplasmodial activity not reported yet. In this study we evaluated the quantitative phytochemicals, in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity of stem bark ethyl acetate extract. In vitro assay was done using P. falciparum 3D7 strain sensitive of chloroquine. For in vivo analysis, four groups of M. musculus were infected by P. berghei...

ESSAYS ON THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN PHYSIOLOGY OF THE 19TH AND THE BEGINNING OF 20TH CENTURIES

Tetiana Zaporozhets, Oleksandr Sanyk
Many new facts and theories have appeared in physiology. The solution of complex physiological problems required collaboration of physiologists, pathologists, biochemists, biophysicists, mathematicians, and other specialists. That was possible due to the rapid development of new technologies as well as the robust foundation laid by the outstanding physiologists of the 19th century. This article describes the activities of outstanding Russian and Ukrainian physiologists of the 19th and the early...

Helminth parasites of the Caucasian agama, Laudakia caucasia (Squamata: Agamidae), from Iran

"Elham Rezazadeh","Fatemeh Tajbakhs","Charles R. Bursey","Iraj Mobedi","Bahram Hassanzadeh Kiabi","Fatemeh Hemmati", "Faraham Ahmadzadeh"
Twenty-two Laudakia caucasia (Agamidae) from Iran were examined for helminths and found to harbor 3 species of Nematoda: Skrjabinodon pigmentatus, Spauligodon lacertae, and Thelandros baylisi. Laudakia caucasia represents a new host record for Sk. pigmentatus and Sp. lacertae; Iran is a new locality record for all 3 nematode species. Thelandros baylisi had the highest prevalence of infection (91%) followed by Sk. pigmentatus (45%) and Sp. lacertae (36%).

Eighteen lesser mouse-eared bats, Myotis blythii (Tomes 1857) (Vespertilionidae) from Zanjan Province, Iran, were examined for parasites and found to harbor one species of Cestoda, Hymenolepis rhinopomae; one species of Nematoda, Molinostrongylus alatus; one species of Diptera, Penicillidia dufourdi; and one species of mite, Spinturnix andegavinus. Myotis blythii represents a new host record for Hymenolepis rhinopomae, and Iran is a new locality record for Molinostrongylus alatus.

"Dr. Neerav Rana", "Dr. Arvind Kumar Goyal", "Dr. Chetan Kumar", and "Dr. V. R. Patil"
ABSTRACT Background: Incidences of sudden deaths (SD) are increasing day by day, especially in younger people. During routine practice, forensic persons have to deal not only criminal, accidental and suicidal deaths, but a large amount of cases of sudden deaths also. Most of the sudden deaths of younger victims are unexpected, clinically unexplained or otherwise obscure. Aims & Objectives: The present study was undertaken to know the major contributory causes of death in young victims of sudde...
