SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COPPER HYDROXYNITRATE BY HYDROTHERMAL METHODDOI: -, PP. 183-192 Subject Areas: Chemical Engineering & Technology Keywords: copper hydroxynitrate, hydrothermal synthesis Abstract In this study, copper hydroxynitrate (Cu2(OH)3NO3) was synthesized by hydrothermal method using Cu(NO3)2.3H2O and Na2B4O7.10H2O as reactants with the addition of zwitterionic 3-(N,N-dimethyldodecylammonio) propanesulfonate (SB12) as the surfactant at 180?C for 24h. The sample was calcined at 400oC. The prepared samples were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. According to X-ray diffraction results monoclinic copper hydroxynitrate (Cu2(OH)3.NO3) and CuO were obtained at 180oC, calcined at 400oC, respectively. TG-DTA analysis showed single stage weight loss. The weight loss of 33.27% at 350°C represents a contemporaneous dissociation of HNO3 and H2O. The FTIR analysis indicates the samples have O-H, O-NO2, N-O and Cu-OH group bands. The SEM results reveal that the copper hydroxynitrate have micrometer-size hexagonal plates. Güner, E.
