Abstract: In this study, kecombrang flowers was extracted with non polar (hexane), semipolar (ethil acetate) and polar (ethanol) solvent. The result revealed that ethil acetat and ethanol extracts inhibited 7 bacteria, i.e : spore forming bacteria (Bacillus cereus), Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and (Listeria monocytogenes), Gram negative bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, Aeromonas hydrophila and Escherichia coli), spoilage bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) but did not inhibit Lactobacillus plantarum. The hexane extract did not show antimicrobial activity. On well diffusion test, ethil acetate developed clear zones of 12.3 ¢a a€ 27.3 mm (diameters) and this was higher than ethanol extract 11.0-15.4 mm (diameters). The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) of ethil acetate and ethanol extract against the seven bacteria were 3-13 mg/ml.

Abstract: Studies on the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Mitragyna speciosa leaf extracts are lacking. In this study the antioxidant properties of water, methanolic and alkaloid M. speciosa leaf extracts were evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging method. The amount of total phenolics and flavanoid contents were also estimated. The DPPH IC50 values of the aqueous, alkaloid and methanolic extracts were 213.4, 104.81 and 37.08 μg/mL, respectively. The total phenolic content of the aqueous, alkaloid and methanolic extracts were 66.0 mg, 88.4, 105.6 mg GAE/g, respectively, while the total flavanoid were 28.2, 20.0 and 91.1 mg CAE/g respectively. The antioxidant activities were correlated with the total phenolic content. This result suggests that the relatively high antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract compared to aqueous and alkaloid extract could be possibly be due to its high phenolic content. The aqueous, alkaloid and methanolic extracts were screened for antimicrobial activity. The extracts showed antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhi and Bacillus subtilis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of extracts determined by the broth dilution method ranged from 3.12 to 6.25 mg/mL. The alkaloid extract was found to be most effective against all of the tested organisms.

Abstract: the structure of the fruit and seed in development of chorisia speciosa are described with the main purpose of clarifying the origin and nature of the hairs that cover the seeds and aiding future taxonomical and ecological studies of the group. the fruit is an ellipsoid loculicide capsule and presents the exocarp formed by 7-10 cells layers, with very thick walls and evident simple pits. a great number of mucilage secretory cavities and ramified vascular bundles, accompanied by fibers, occur in the parenchymatic mesocarp. the endocarp derives from the ventral epidermis of the ovary wall, whose cells undergo a gradual elongation, become lignified, and constitute the trichomes which cover the mature seeds. the fruit aperture occurs by means of a suture evident in the ovarian wall in the middle region of the carpel leaf. anatropous and bitegmic ovules, provided by a hypostase, give rise to campilotropous and bitegmic seeds. the testa is uniseriate, the exotegmen is completely formed by macrosclereids, and mucilage secretory cavities occur in the mesotegmen. the endotegmen, which is differentiated in the endothelium, is crushed in the mature seed. the plicate embryo, which occupies practically the entire seminal cavity, is found between endosperm layers, both being rich in lipids.

Abstract: the beetle astylus variegatus (germ.) (coleoptera: melyridae) is frequently found in flowers feeding on pollen. responses of a. variegatus to volatile floral attractants were studied in common beans (phaseolus vulgaris l.) fields. traps originally designed to capture diabrotica speciosa (germ.) (coleoptera: chrysomelidae), consisted of plastic bottles (2 l) with 150 holes (5-mm diameter) yellow gold painted and containing inside a plastic strip (3.5 ′ 25 cm) with lagenaria vulgaris (l.) powder (0.28% b cucurbitacin - feeding stimulant and arrestant for diabroticites) sprayed with carbaril insecticide. treatments consisted of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (one or two dispensers per trap), 1,4-dimethoxybenze + indole, 1,4-dimethoxybenzene + cinnameldehyde and control. volatile average release rates (over ten days) was approximately 32 mg day-1 per dispenser under laboratory conditions. 1,4-dimethoxybenzene-lured traps caught significantly more beetles than the control, three and seven days after trap setting. ten days after the onset of the experiment, there were no differences in number of beetles caught by treatments. captures were higher in the 1,4-dimethoxybenzene + cinnamaldehyde treatment than in 1,4-dimethoxybenzene only in the first assessment. adding indole to 1,4-dimethoxybenzene did not improve beetle captures.

Abstract: Oenothera speciosa, belonging to thermophilous plant, cannot overwinter in Beijing. To enhance the overwintering rate of Oenothera speciosa, the seeds were treated through silico ion implantation (SII), with five various fluence ranges (1 × 109 - 1 × 1011 ions/cm2) of 40 MeV and four various fluence ranges (1 × 1010 - 5 × 1011 ions/cm2) of 35 MeV, respectively. M1 generations of various SII-treated Oenothera speciosa lines can overwinter, and the highest overwinter rate (41.3%) was observed in Oenothera speciosa lines treated with 35 MeV and fluence 5 × 1010 ions/cm2. M2 and M3 generations of all treated lines were able to overwinter smoothly. The results indicated that SII treatment can enhance the cold-resistance of Oenothera speciosa heritably. Furthermore, physiological indexes including relative electrical conductivity, MDA contents and proline contents of SII-treated Oenothera speciosa pot seedlings were detected after low temperature stress. The results revealed that relative electrical conductivities and MDA contents of M1, M2 and M3 generations of SII-treated Oenothera speciosa plants were lower than that of control, whereas the proline contents were higher than control in the -5°C cold stress. Taken together, the cold resistance of SII-treated Oenothera speciosa plants was improved, which made it possible to be used as a perennial flower in landscaping in Beijing.

Abstract: the present work had the objective of characterizing physico-chemical parameters of the mangaba fruits, either "fallen" or "of the time", and to study the effect of the storage of mangaba (hancornia speciosa gomes) at different temperatures on its postharvest conservation. the fruits were selected and stored in cold chambers at 6, 18 and 25 ± 2oc. during storage, samples were removed at 3, 5, 7 and 9 days, for determination of vitamin c content, ph, total acidity and soluble solids (obrix) content, water activity, conductivity, resistivity and difusivity. it was verified that "fallen" mangabas presented vitamin c and solid soluble contents superior to the "of the time" fruits. the storage at 6oc was efficient in keeping the physico-chemical properties of "of the time" mangabas, whereas for "fallen" mangabas the physico-chemical properties were maintained for a period of up to three days when submitted to temperatures of 25 and 18oc. a fall of the water activity and increase of the thermal condutivity of mangaba during the period of cold storage was observed. thus, the thermal conductivity, the resistivity and the water activity can be used as parameters to follow postharvest fruits of mangaba when stored under refrigeration.
