Ender BAYKUT
- , 2018,
Abstract: This study attempts to determine volatility and regime switching structure of BIST C?ty Indices over 2012-2017 period by using daily closing values. Three asymmetrical (EGARCH, TGARCH and PARCH) as well as two symmetrical (ARCH and GARCH) models were tested to reveal any asymmetrical conditions in comparing the volatilities and regime switching structure of XSADA, XSANT, XSANK, XSBAL, XSBUR, XSDNZ, XSIST, XSIZM, XSKAY, XSKOC, XSKON and XSTKR. For each model, three lagged values were calculated. TIC coefficients were used in comparing the models. The analyses of the volatility persistency reveal that XSKOC index is the most volatile and XSKAY index is the most stable according to remaining indices. The results of daily volatilities reveal that XSANT is the most volatile index while XSKOC is the most stable index. As a result of the analysis in order to determine regime structure of indices, two regimes were detected for all (12) indices which were taken into consideration. According to findings, the indices generally prefer to stay in higher regime if they are in the high regime and they tend to shift from low regime to the high regime if they are in low regime. XSBUR Index offers significant opportunities to the investors while staying 62.06 days in the high regime period whereas XSADA index was determined as the shortest high regime-staying period through only 9.41 days. XSIZM Index was determined as the worst index based on its duration (7.18 days) for staying in low regime. On the other hand, the XSKAY Index was detected as the shortest-staying index in low regime and fastest index escape from the decline trend

- , 2019,
Abstract: In science education, the association of knowledge with day life includes significant gains for both the teacher and the student. In addition, students who use scientific facts to explain daily events, like science and are successful in hypothesizing. Experimental and descriptive studies have been carried out on students' associating their knowledge with daily life. Nevertheless, no studies were found to have conducted at the primary school level. Moving from this point, the aim of this study is to elicit the state of primary school 4th graders' ability to associate the knowledge they gain from the science class with daily life. The study adopted a screening research model to explore the association between primary school 4th graders' level of associating the knowledge they gain related to the science class with everyday life and their academic achievements. The study sample consists of total of 39 students recruited in the 2017-2018 academic year from Tokat province central district and villages through the convenient sampling method. In the study, an application form consisting of 20 open-ended questions related to daily events and requiring written answers, and science course grades were used in order to collect data. According to the findings of the study the rate of understanding was found to be low whereas the rate of misunderstanding was higher. When the state of students' academic achievements and their association with daily life events is examined, the rate of understanding was found to be higher among the students with the highest academic achievement levels, however, the highest amount of misunderstanding was found to occur among students with mediocre academic achievement. Also examined in the study was the relationship between the school campus where education is being conducted and the association of science class knowledge with daily life. According to this, the misunderstanding rate of the students educated in the villages is higher than those educated in the district and the city center

- , 2019,
Abstract: The works of Edward Hopper that consist of images of daily American life are structured in a way to reflect the individual who is isolated with the development of industrialization. For this reason, in order to understand the paintings of the artist, firstly the conditions of the United States in the 20th century were discussed, and the loneliness, alienation and isolation of the modern individual were focused on. The era of war and economic crisis the country was involved in was elaborated upon by establishing a relationship with the pessimistic ambiance in the paintings of Hopper. After describing these sources utilized by the artist, the works named Automat (1927), Room in New York (1932), New York Movie (1939), Nighthawks (1942) and Western Motel (1957) were historically and sociologically examined with the critical method through the American lifestyle and the traces it carries regarding modern life. During this examination, it was aimed to make an association between the elements used by the painter in his compositions, his way of approaching the topic and the stylistic elements of his paintings and the American social structure in the 20th century. This association is not only important as it shows that changing position of the individual in the society against the modern lifestyle, but also provides Hopper’s paintings with the quality of documents. When artist’s works are examined, it is clear that the artist is in the concern of showing the 20th century American society and culture to which he belongs. Therefore, these works, which describe the modern life as a result of the Second Industrial Revolution that emerged in America in the 1900s, emphasize the relationship of the individual with modernity and show the artist's desire to describe the realities of the outside world

- , 2018,
Abstract: The diaries of Rauf Fico, Albanian Minister Plenipotentiary to Ankara, gives a lot of useful information about Albania-Turkey relations that had not been stumbled across in the literature until today. The aim of this study is to point out Atatürk’s views on relations between Albania and Turkey, Albania and Italy, as well as his suggestions to Albanian envoy in Ankara about how to overcome the Albanian dependency on Italy. The research is based on the diaries of Fico, Albanian Minister Plenipotentiary to Ankara. The study is limited with focusing on the Italian factor in Albania’s relations with Turkey rather than examining all aspects of the relationship between the two independent countries. Fico had had formal education in the Ottoman Empire and occupied bureaucratic posts such as being provincial governor and following independence of Albania started to work for Albanian government as an important diplomat. Therefore, his diaries provide us a plenty of information on the question of Albania’s relations with Turkey as well as with Italy, particularly between 1925 and 1928 during which there had been a Republican regime in Albania. In fact, Fico’s diaries give perfect information about close relations between Turkey and Albania and the importance given by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on these relations at bilateral level, at least until the destruction of the Republican regime by Ahmet Zogu who would proclaim himself as the King of Albania in 1928. The content of the Fico’s diaries are very rich in a way that they consist problems of Orthodox Albanians in Istanbul, positions of Albanians in Kosovo, the exchange of Albanian Chams, reforms in Turkey, assassination attempt to Atatürk in ?zmir and main themes in Nutuk. It should be kept in mind that the scope of this study is confined, first, to suggestions of Ataturk to the Albanian government regarding getting rid of dependency on Italy, and second, to his foresight about Italy’s position towards Albania and Turkey. In this respect, the Fico’s diaries give invaluable information on all these subjects elaborated in this paper

Abstract: Purpose: In the constantly changing and evolving world of today, there is a need to raise individuals who are able to renew themselves, learn autonomously, and have higher order thinking skills such as critical thinking and deducing. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of Technology Enhanced Problem-Based Learning Activities (TEPLA), developed with regard to the aforementioned need, on learners’ attitudes towards mathematics and academic achievement in mathematics through qualitative data in order to designate the underlying causes of these effects. Method: In the research, conducted as a case study, the analysis of the written and oral interviews were held with students using “Student Interview Form” in order to analyze the effect of TEPLA on the attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics achievements of study group students who were applied TEPLA by the first author. Findings: The analysis revealed two main dimensions affecting the association between TEPLA and learners’ attitudes towards mathematics: Affection and Usefulness, which comprised five and three distinct reasons, respectively. On the other hand, ten factors were defined to account for the impact of using TEPLA on learners’ mathematics achievement. Implications for Research and Practice: The research findings suggested that learners found TEPLA interesting and meaningful. Thus, it can be suggested that the impact of TEPLA on learner motivation can also be investigated using a motivation scale. Moreover, learners stated during interviews that they achieved retention in learning thanks to TEPLA. Thus, the finding regarding TEPLA’s impact on retention can be further investigated quantitatively

- , 2019,
Abstract: The purpose of this mixed method study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Multiple Intelligences (MI) on preschool children’s intelligences, learning styles, interests and active participation to the daily activities. Researchers conducted a two-phased study in an urban preschool classroom with the cooperation of the teacher. In the first phase, the teacher made observations of her class to decide the dominant intelligences, learning styles, interests and participation of the children while she was conducting her usual semi-structured daily plans based on the National Preschool Education Curriculum. Based on the observations, for each child, she filled out the MI Inventory (MULIN) developed by the researchers. Each child was interviewed by the researchers and asked to mark the MI Self Evaluation Picture Control List (MISEC) developed by Fleetham (2008). The data collected was graphed and interpreted to conclude the MI Profile of the class. In the second phase, children were exposed to the Daily Plan Enriched with MI Inspirations in the leadership of the teacher. Researchers observed and videotaped the whole procedure. The teacher was interviewed to find out whether there were differences on the children’s interests and active participation during the daily plan enriched with MI inspirations comparing with the traditional daily plans she has been conducting. The findings of the study showed that Daily Plan Enriched with MI Inspirations made an effect on children’s interests and active participation in the daily activities since they covered all the intelligences and addressed different learning styles of the children. Findings not only provide insight into the role of MI on children’s interests and active participation but also draw attention to the importance of having all the eight MI and addressing all the learning styles of the children in the daily plans
