Discussing the Life of the Others: Doing Ethnography in the Brazilian Big Brother Fan Community
Bruno Campanella
DIGITHUM , 2009,
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present some of the initial results of ethnographic research conducted in early 2008 with the online fan community of the Brazilian Big Brother (BBB). After a brief introduction to some of the challenges faced by ethnographic work on television audiences in the last couple of decades, the current piece will explore some of the main characteristics constituting this new social space. Beyond the gossiping, and the more immediate talks about behaviors and game strategies of the Big Brother housemates, these forums sometimes trigger exchanges about Brazilian society at large, and the role of television broadcasting in general. Nonetheless, a closer inspection reveals how the debates found in the community are themselves permeated by the participants' struggle for status.
O F NA CULTURA DA DIVERGêNCIA: HIERARQUIA E DISPUTA EM UMA COMUNIDADE ON-LINE
CAMPANELLA, Bruno

PERFORMATIVE ELEMENTS IN "BIG BROTHER" (Summary)
Radman, Korana
- , 2008,
Abstract: Sa?etak This paper tries to shed a different light on the "Big Brother" phenomenon as it tries to imply some of the ideas which have inspired performance theories. Up until now from the academic point of view the "Big Brother" phenomenon was mostly frowned upon, considered generally a bad influence or yet another product of late capitalism. Emphasising its connections to the economic and political forces which are trying to control the innocent auditorium through the media, "Big Brother" has been presented as a none dimensional field of research with only one possible model. The idea of this paper was to introduce performance theory into the study of "Big Brother" in hope that it would induce different points of view not just for the phenomenon itself but for the postmodern media in general. The article is based on the understanding that the performances are symbolic acts which can be considered as texts because they convey meanings to their public. Taking that into consideration, this paper tried to recognise some of the communicative strategies through the performances of "Big Brother" housemates. Three levels of performance were recognised in the fourth season of "Big Brother" on the Croatian RTL TV station. On the first, most general level, the author emphasises the performative attributes of the series as well as the postmodern media itself. On the second level the performance of gender in "Big Brother" is underlined, which is especially important since it includes the appearance of the first homosexual person in the Croatian series. The performative aspect of gender is used to explain how and why the non-dominant gender performance is unacceptable to others, primary male housemates. Finally, on the third level it is shown how individual performance is interpreted as part of a wider strategy to fit amongst others in the "Big Brother" house and potentially to win the sympathies of the viewers
Propaganda and Surveillance in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Michael Yeo
Global Media Journal : Canadian Edition , 2010,
Abstract: Propaganda and surveillance are pervasive in contemporary society. Extensive literatures have developed around each. George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is an important point of reference in both literatures. Orwell takes both propaganda and surveillance to extreme limits: total surveillance and total propaganda. Writing them large he brings important aspects of each into sharp relief, which is why his novel has the iconic status that it does for theorists in both literatures. However Nineteen Eighty-Four is of interest not just for its potential contribution to theorizing about propaganda or about surveillance. Propaganda and surveillance in the novel are not just accidentally related but essentially linked. I show how they work not just individually but in tandem in Orwell’s text, playing complementary roles in an absurd project of total social control directed not just at behaviour but also thought. Relating propaganda and surveillance in a sustained and systematic reading of the novel reveals it to be an even richer resource for theorizing about either surveillance or propaganda than it is when read, as it typically is, with an emphasis on one or the other. Additionally, from a literary perspective this reading opens up what I believe is a fresh perspective on the novel and makes it more inviting for a thoughtful and rewarding reread.
Is Reality TV Neoliberal?
Guy Redden
- , 2018, DOI: 10.1177/1527476417728377
Abstract: Reality TV is a distinctive mode of television programming that has developed exclusively in the last twenty years, raising the question of how it is of its times. Reality shows have often been described as “neoliberal” in their logic. They typically present participants as self-responsible enterprising authors of their own lives in ways consistent with the valorization of market relations by neoliberal theorists. I argue for and expand on this interpretation, arguing the role of the “ordinary people” they feature largely is to perform competitive entrepreneurial subjectivity without expectation of fair recompense, but in the hope of attaining extraordinary rewards. Hereby media industries construct narrative worlds consistent with the economic basis on which they employ, but also with recent neoliberal political economy that has been marked by the decline of collective social support and rising inequality among citizens
Electoral Courts and the Regulation of Social Media in Brazil: An Analysis of the Anti-Democratic Disinformation Regulation during the 2022 Elections  [PDF]

Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2025.162054
Abstract: This study analyzes the need for specific legislation regulating big techs’ activities concerning network transparency and accountability in Brazilian law, considering the massive dissemination of fake news and the question of its influence on democratic stability. Drawing on the operations of major technology firms and their algorithms, coupled with prevalent self-regulation and the lack of comprehensive data on fake news dissemination, this work establishes parameters based on the decisions of the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Regional Electoral Courts (TREs) regarding anti-democratic fake news shared on social media during electoral processes. The research is both fundamental and applied in nature, incorporates a propositional objective, and employs bibliographic, documentary, and jurimetric methods through a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative techniques, employs content analysis and incorporates an instrument-validation procedure. The conclusion presents an objective synthesis of the findings, including an assessment of the tested hypotheses, in a propositional format aligned with the study’s purpose. It also reflects on the data analysis to underscore the imperative of regulating social media as a mechanism to preserve democratic order.

- , 2015,
Abstract: Sa?etak According to the data from the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, entertaining programme constitutes a quarter of all TV stations broadcast (24.9%) and more than half of radio stations broadcast (53.66%). The content analysis of television programmes of three public broadcasters (BHT 1, RTRS, FTV) as well as two commercial TV stations with nationwide coverage (TV Hayat and TV BN) in prime time (from 17 to 23 hours) on weekly base, based on the review of the programmes, showed that entertainment is one of the most important segments of television programmes, on both commercial TV stations, as well as public service in BiH. Qualitative analysis of Grand Show, that stands for the one of the most popular music and entertainment shows, not only in BiH, but wider, for almost two decades, indicates that this show belongs to kitsch culture. Furthermore, certain similarities between reality show programs like Big Brother or Farm and french Theatre of the absurd were found
