Revista Ciência da Madeira , 2012,
Abstract: The objective of this paper was to evaluate the wood from Angelim Vermelho (Dinizia excelsa Duck) by means of nondestructive methods (transverse vibration, ultrasound and static bending) and also to determine the most suitable method to estimate static bendingmodulus of elasticity. Fifty structural beams from angelim vermelho were nondestructively evaluated and static bending modulus of elasticity (EM), transverse vibration (Edvt) and ultrasound stiffness coefficient (CLL) were calculated. Data was analyzed through linearsimple regression using Edvt and CLL as predictors of Em. The results pointed out that Edvt was the most suitable variable to estimate EM in comparison to CLL. It could be concluded that transverse vibration is recommended to grade wood from Dinizia excelsa Ducke, which presented good values of stiffness.

Abstract: The nature of acoustic charge, which works with an electronic generator to generate high intensity ultra-acoustic field is very various in function of application used [2]. The values of elements from equivalent scheme may be to vary in time in function of technologic process [3]. This fact determines the variation of accord frequencies and value of acoustic charge. In this manner the efficiency can be modified in time if it no take measures to minimize these influences of complex impedance that works with electronic generator [4]. In this paper it is presented a method to analysis the influence of variation of acoustic charge and to minimize this influences for to assure an optimum operation of electronic generator, it is presented a program to calculate the power variation in function of acoustic charge and to chart the diagram of this variation. It is presented the experimental results obtained with the theory presented.

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2013.412155
Abstract:

Several complaints arose from houses near an object bridge about rattling sounds caused by infrasound, a low-frequency noise in the 0 - 20 Hz frequency range. In Japan, conventional trucks with a rear leaf suspension have vibration frequencies of about 3.0 Hz; furthermore, their tire spring vibration frequency is 10 - 20 Hz. Infrasound is radiated from the bridge owing to the truck’s suspension spring vibration and/or tire spring vibration. In this study, the bridge vibrations were investigated using test trucks or conventional trucks to determine the cause of rattling sounds. It was found that the truck’s spring vibration caused excessive bending vibration in the object bridge; this in turn was transmitted to nearby houses as infrasound. Various preventive measures for infrasound were then considered, and their effectiveness was investigated through a simulation of the dynamic response using a running truck. The difference between each measure’s effectiveness as obtained by a comparison with each simulation’s result provided a clear picture about the infrasound reduction methods in consideration of both construction cost and working difficulty.

Experimental Modal Analysis of Stator Overhangs of a Large Turbogenerator  [PDF]
Ram Sewak, Rajesh Ranjan, Vivek Kumar
Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/epe.2011.33028
Abstract: Modal analysis of engg. structure for comprehending/resolving the vibration related issues/problems are well known. Two classical techniques-analytical (Finite Element Method-FEM) and experimental (Impact testing/Natural Frequency Test-NFT/Bump test) are generally used as complementary as well as stand-alone depending on the time, nature of structure, availability of the analysis tools, cost etc. In the present study, experimental technique was used in mitigating the endwinding vibration problem of a turbogenerator. In one of the Turbogenerators of 50 Hz variant, an increasing vibration trend was observed with system frequency sweep in almost whole of the endwinding basket particularly more on exciter end during sustained short / open circuit conditional runs. Experimental modal analysis was carried out of the overhangs. Frequency response functions (FRFs) were generated in local and global modes. The analysis thereon indicated global resonance of stator overhangs. Accordingly, appropriate remedial measures were planned and implemented. Consequently, global resonance frequency was shifted to higher zone, which in turn, resulted into substantial reduction in endwinding vibration levels.

Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2011.45052
Abstract: Introduction: In this paper a simulation model for predicting the temperature during the application of focused ultrasound (FUS) for stroke treatment using pulsed ultrasound is presented. Materials and methods: A single element spherically focused transducer of 5 cm diameter, focusing at 10 cm and operating at either 0.5MHz or 1MHz was considered. The power field was estimated using the Khokhlov-Zabolot-skaya-Kuznetzov (KZK) model. The temperature was estimated using the bioheat equation. The goal was to extract the acoustic parameters (frequency, power, and duty factor) that maintain a temperature increase of less than 1oC during the application of a pulse ultrasound protocol. Results: It was found that the temperature change increases linearly with duty factor. The higher the power, the lower the duty factor needed to keep the temperature change to the safe limit of 1oC. The higher the frequency the lower the duty factor needed to keep the temperature change to the safe limit of 1oC. Finally, the shallow the target, the lower the duty factor needed to keep the temper-ature change to the safe limit of 1oC. The simulation model was tested in brain tissue during the application of pulse ultrasound and the measured temperature was in close agreement with the simulated tem-perature. Conclusions: This simulation model is con-sidered to be very useful tool for providing acoustic parameters (frequency, power, and duty factor) dur-ing the application of pulsed ultrasound at various depths in tissue so that a safe temperature is main-tained during the treatment. This model will be tested eventually during stroke clinical trials.

Abstract: Background: Catheter intervention is occasionally complicated by a pseudoaneurysm at the puncture site. Although the feasibility of echo-guided repair of a pseudoaneurysm has been reported, this method does not always repair the pseudoaneurysm. We hypothesized that if the communication to the artery could be effectively closed by pin-point compression, the clot that forms in the residual lumen would effectively cover the communication. We studied the safety and efficacy of the echo-guided pinpoint compression procedure for repairing a pseudoaneurysm. Methods: Ten consecutive patients with a pseudoaneurysm were enrolled. We determined the site of communication by echography with a high-frequency linear probe. We performed pin-point compression on the communication point with the right index finger, and we confirmed closure of the communication by color Doppler. During compression, we monitored echo images to confirm clot formation. Results: A pseudoaneurysm was located on the femoral artery in 6 patients and on the brachial artery in 4 patients. The sizes of the pseudoaneurysms ranged from 13 to 40 mm in diameter. We successfully closed the communication with one-finger compression in all patients. During the compression, we observed clot formation in the residual lumen of the pseudoaneurysm in all patients by echography. The duration of compression ranged from 5 to 40 minutes (mean, 18 minutes). We succeeded in repairing the pseudoaneurysm in all patients using this method. The success of the procedure was also confirmed 24 hours later in all patients. Conclusions: Echo-guided pin-point compression of the communication might be an effective technique for repairing a pseudoaneurysm at the puncture site, and echography is useful for confirming the success of the procedure.

Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2013.31023
Abstract: Background: Uterine artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare diagnosis made postoperatively after pelvic surgery. The exact etiology is unknown however it is speculated to occur when an artery is lacerated and the perivascular tissue maintains persistent blood flow with the parent vessel. It can present with severe hemorrhage two to four weeks after an uncomplicated post operative course. Case: A 45 year old presented with vaginal hemorrhage and hypotension two weeks after abdominal myomectomy. Transvaginal ultrasound with doppler diagnosed pseudoaneurysm of the uterine artery. The patient was successfully treated with endovascular embolization utilizing micro coils. Conclusion: Transvaginal ultrasound is a useful technique in diagnosing pseudoaneurysms. Endovascular embolization is a minimally invasive, safe and effective way to treat this rare complication in institutions that have access to interventional radiology procedures.

Open Journal of Gastroenterology (OJGas) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojgas.2013.33031
Abstract:

Background and Aim: Hepatic hydrothorax is one of the complications encountered in end stage liver disease. Pleural drainage carries the risk of massive protein and electrolyte depletion as well as the risk of bleeding and hepatic encephalopathy. Pleurodesis following pleural aspiration decreases the chance of pleural effusion recurrence, and has been a widely used long-standing method of controlling recurrent pleural effusions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of pleurodesis using ultrasound-guided iodopovidone sclerotherapy in hepatic hydrothorax. Patients and Methods: This prospective study included 56 patients with clinical, laboratory and radiological evidence of liver cirrhosis and symptomatic right sided hepatic hydrothorax. All patients were subjected to repeated thoracentesis. Ten ml of lidocaine 2% were injected in the pleural space followed by 20 ml of iodopovidone. The follow-up was done after 3 months. Results: The sclerotherapy procedure was successful in 40 out of 56 cases (71.4%), and the success rate was 66.7% in massive effusion and reached 80% in moderate effusion. Twenty eight patients (50%) had to repeat the procedure for a second time, sixteen of which (28.6%) failed despite the second trial and twelve cases (21.4%) showed no fluid reaccumulation. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided iodopovidone sclerotherapy is an effective approach for a successful pleurodesis in hepatic hydrothorax.
