Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2011,
Abstract: Malignant melanoma with its varied clinical presentations and histomorphological patterns is a perplexing problem both for the diagnosticians and clinicians. A small proportion of melanomas present with metastatic tumors with unknown primary sites and at these sites they mimic the more common primary neoplasms. We hereby report a case of malignant melanoma presenting as a submandibular lump in a 40 year old female. This lump was present for six months and was rapidly increasing in size. On cytology it was diagnosed as salivary gland neoplasm.

Abstract: salivary gland neoplasms are remarkable for their histological diversity and several studies point to their varied occurrence in the population. clinical aspects were histologically assessed to determine possible associations and define parameters to differentiate benign and malignant neoplasms. the case files of patients diagnosed with epithelial salivary gland tumors between 1989 and 2005 were reviewed. a majority (71%) of the 303 salivary gland tumors studied were benign and pleomorphic adenoma were found to be most common. mean ages for patients with benign and malignant tumors were 49.2 and 58.5 years, respectively. a statistically significant difference between these tumors was observed for the following variables: mean age, tumor size and disease duration. a correlation was found between histological diagnosis and tumor consistency. the data presented here corroborate a number of previous studies and are therefore relevant in understanding the diverse characteristics exhibited by these tumors.

Abstract: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumour of glandular tissue, usually of the major salivary glands. However it can present in the minor salivary glands, especially in the soft palate. We report the case of a 72-year-old Malay female after presentation with sore throat, fever and odynophagia, was diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the soft palate.

Abstract: Background: Salivary gland tumors are uncommon. This study aimed to investigate both clinical and epidemiological aspects of minor salivary gland tumors in a Brazilian population. Methods: From 1976 to 2007, data obtained from clinical records and histological diagnoses were reviewed according to the WHO. Results: A total of 217 MSGTs were identified. Pleomorphic adenomas (83%) and adenoid cystic carcinomas (28.8%) were the most frequent ones. The mean age of patients with benign and malignant tumors was 54.7 and 44.7 years, respectively. There was a female predominance and the palate was the most affected location. Surgery was the treatment of choice, but adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy were also used. Recurrence rate of benign and malignant tumors was respectively 11.2% and 20.4%. Conclusion: this population showed a relatively higher proportion of malignant tumors, and these tumors were associated with a higher rate of recurrence when compared to benign tumors. However, the overall recurrence of 16.2% was also within the reported range for these tumors. In addition, despite the results of this study are similar to previous series found in the literature, it provides an important insight into the epidemiology of patients presenting minor salivary gland tumors.

Abstract: pleomorphic adenoma (pa), the most common salivary gland tumor, accounts for 54 to 65% of all salivary gland neoplasias and 80% of the benign salivary gland tumors. it most frequently affects the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular and the minor salivary glands. microscopically, mucous, sebaceous, oncocytic and squamous metaplasia, sometimes with the formation of keratin pearls, may be present, but the latter rarely results in the formation of extensive keratin-flled cysts lined by squamous epithelium. extensive squamous metaplasia can be mistaken for malignancy, including mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. here, we present an unusual case of pa with extensive squamous metaplasia and keratin cyst formations in a minor salivary gland, and discuss its microscopic features, including the immunohistochemical characteristics, and differential diagnosis of this uncommon presentation.

Abstract: objetivos: the benign and wicked pathologies of the salivary gland are bound to the characteristic anatomopatologic, which are in permanent revision and whose classification is controversial. the cytology for punction with fine needle it has arisen minimamly as a technique invasive of diagnose tumorous lesions. the utility of the fine needle aspiration puntion has demonstrated to be a method, cheap, sensitive, specify for diagnose of tumour and lesions non tumours and it allows distinguishing surgical cases of not surgical. methods: one carries out a descriptive, retrospective, traverse and observational study. 47 histories were revised with diagnose clinical of lesion in salivary gland; the available histological discoveries were revised in 33 cases to establish the correlation citohistologic. results: of 47 patients to which are carried out aspired 11 were inadequate and 36 enough or appropriate, inflammatory 3 cases. benign primary neoplasms was 23 patients of which 17 corresponded to adenoma pleomorphic. 6 cases were wicked epithelial neoplasms, 1 neoplasms lymphoid and 2 neoplasms metastasic. conclusions: fine needle aspiration of salivary gland is a method that helps distingue benign lesions of wicked, primary of metastatic, in this sense pursues, and often allows, to settle down if it is or not of a tumors process, and in this last case, to determine the benign or wicked nature of the same one, its primary or secondary character, facilitating this way an appropriate selection of this salivary pathology in a sense medical o surgery.

Abstract: this study was aimed at assessing the quality of life in patients submitted to surgical treatment for minor salivary gland neoplasms (msgn). twelve patients (10 women and 2 men, mean age: 49.4 years) with histopathologic diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma (pa, 3 cases), polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (plga, 2 cases), cystic adenoid carcinoma (cac, 4 cases), and muco-epidermoid carcinoma (mec, 3 cases) were evaluated. all of them were treated by surgical excision; patients with cac received radiotherapy as well. the patients’ quality of life was evaluated through a self-administered questionnaire concerning their physical well-being, emotional status, normal daily activities, and family relationships. the results showed that patients with mec - the youngest among all patients - reported a significantly greater worsening of their physical well-being and emotional status after treatment as compared with patients treated for pa (p < 0.05), and also of their functional activities as compared with those treated for pa and plga (p < 0.05). in conclusion, age of development of the neoplasm and type of disease produce more impact on patients’ quality of life than does the therapy’s degree of aggression.
