Advances in Aerospace Science and Technology (AAST) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/aast.2025.103007
Abstract: Big Data Analytics (BDA) is transforming industries worldwide, including the airline sector, by enabling data-driven decision making that improves operational efficiency and profitability. This research focuses on the application of BDA in Biman Bangladesh Airlines, a key player in Southeast Asia’s aviation market where adoption of such technologies is still emerging. Revenue management systems, crucial for airline profitability, benefit significantly from big data insights that influence fleet planning, fare structuring, and operational management. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from airline professionals and managers across Bangladesh, complemented by detailed case studies of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The study examines how Biman leverages BDA to enhance flight punctuality, optimize passenger and cargo load factors, improve fuel efficiency, and increase customer satisfaction. Results demonstrate that effective use of big data analytics enables better decision-making, helping airlines respond flexibly to operational challenges and market demands. Despite these advantages, the research also highlights challenges related to building analytics capabilities and managing complex data environments in the airline industry. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of how airlines in developing markets can harness BDA strategically to boost revenue, improve competitiveness, and support sustainable growth.

Modern Economy (ME) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/me.2013.44032
Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to investigate the dynamic changes in the competition between air carriers by applying a revised conduct parameter method. We examine the cases of Southwest Airlines and America West Airlines due to the availability of data. Our interests are in what fashion a low-cost carrier entered the market, how the rival reacted, and whether the fashions of competition between two types of air carrier remained stable as time passed. Our empirical results show that the fashions of competition fell between Cournot and “P = MC” competition, and competitive fashions were sometimes stable but sometimes not.

American Journal of Industrial and Business Management (AJIBM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ajibm.2016.66066
Abstract: This paper reports the findings of an empirical study on the low-cost airline market. A lot of literatures on low-cost carriers’ business model agree that low-cost airlines operate with high load factors. However, due to variations in the market development life cycle of low-cost carriers from one region to another, empirical evidences have shown mixed results of the effect of increasing airline capacity on load factor. The paper therefore extends this analysis by examining two airlines in Kenya over 72 months period; and explores such impact using panel data to capture both time-series and cross-sectional elements over the period. Findings indicate that fleet capacity is a significant positive predictor of load factor. The paper finally underlines that increasing capacity by 1 seat will result in an increase of 0.03% in load factor.
Mediating Role of Route Characteristics on Effect of Low-Cost Carriers on the Airline Market in Kenya  [PDF]

American Journal of Industrial and Business Management (AJIBM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ajibm.2016.65058
Abstract: Studies show that low-cost carriers have gained 15.2% market shares while enplanement had increased by 38% following their emergence. Whereas frequency is directly influenced by airlines’ key factor such as turn-time, it, on the other hand, influences directly other airline market parameters. This proposes a mediation possibility. However, the mediating role of frequency on the relationship between turn-time on carriers’ market share, and the effect of low-cost carrier in Kenya was still unknown. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the mediating role of route characteristics on the effect of low-cost carriers on the airline market in Kenya. The specific objective of the study was to determine the effect of the mediating frequency on the relationship between turn-time and carriers’ market share. Using panel data of 2 airlines to capture both time-series and cross-sectional elements over the 72 months period, this paper will illustrate that frequency partially and off-the-scale significantly mediates turn-time-carrier’s market share relation. Path regression analysis is used to track the influence of the mediating route characteristics.
Air transportation and tourism in the Croatian littoral

Geoadria , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse and explain the impact of air transportation on the development of tourism in the Croatian littoral. The analysis was made by using the data collected from flight schedules and airport authorities. The data on frequency of lines and number of passengers were analysed in order to correlate the distribution of the number of passengers with the number of tourists during the year. In this case, the correlation between the number of passengers and the number of arrivals/number of overnight stays is observed. Data for the time period from 2008 till 2010 were analysed in more detail by dividing the passengers into four categories: full-service passengers, low-cost passengers, charter passengers and general aviation passengers. Major touristic markets are identified on the basis of the number of connections between European and Croatian littoral airports. The last part of the paper deals with the increasing impact of low-cost services on the development of tourism in the Croatian littoral region. This is due to the fact that low-cost carriers have accounted for a considerable part of air transport in the last few years.

Abstract: Charter airlines operating all-inclusive vacation packages on the short-haul European market are quickly being replaced by low-cost carriers. The business model of low-cost carriers is now evolving to capture the long-haul travel segment and consequentially could replace the all-inclusive package holidays provided by the Charter airlines in this market. The research deduces that this will not transpire. The study extrapolates the opinions from experts who resonate that three pivotal cornerstones the differentiate Charter airlines from low-cost long-haul carriers which comprise of its destination expertise, Air Travel Organiser Licence affiliation and its horizontally integrated multifaceted enterprise. A passenger survey directed exclusively at passengers travelling on Charter airlines to long-haul destinations in Latin America found that vacationers aged 56 years and older together with families would not opt to vacation on low-cost long-haul airlines

Abstract: Sa?etak Air transport is the newest form of traffic branch and, in today’s modern conditions, it advances very quickly. Basically, air transport provides passenger transportation, especially to far-away destinations, because of its greatest advantage - speed of travel. Due to globalization, the air transport market is characterized by strong competition, and the liberalization of the Croatian air transport industry has contributed to the increased utilization of international passenger transport. Precisely as a result of the aforementioned influences, air transport requirements in Croatia are experiencing higher growth. The dependence on air transport and tourism is increasingly necessary and of great economic importance. With the emergence of low-fare airlines on the Croatian market, passengers have more choices and opportunities than ever before. With their presence on the market, low-cost carriers have greatly influenced the air transport market and contributed to the growth of passenger traffic. This paper aims to explore passengers’ satisfaction with low-cost carriers. The results of primary research show that passengers who travel with low-cost carriers place high importance on pricing, ticket availability and destination availability, and are satisfied with the service they receive in comparison to the ticket price. Passengers place importance on how quickly they can buy tickets online and the availability of various payment options

Abstract: The subject of maintenance is of much importance in the implementation of projects in today’s industries. Maintenance is carried on energy systems to keep their performance within acceptable standards and to maintain their average life expectancy. The cost associated with maintenance work is largely dependent on how often maintenance routines are carried out and the extent the work are done. Current maintenance work are usually carried out in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s guide line and modified by experts as maintenance experience is gained. This paper discusses the various maintenance schemes and the impact of maintenance on the life cycle costs of a system.
Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Cost of Waste Management—Plastic Cable Waste  [PDF]
Mats Zackrisson, Christina J?nsson, Elisabeth Olsson
Advances in Chemical Engineering and Science (ACES) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aces.2014.42025
Abstract:

The main driver for recycling cable wastes is the high value of the conducting metal, while the plastic with its lower value is often neglected. New improved cable plastic recycling routes can provide both economic and environmental incentive to cable producers for moving up the “cable plastic waste ladder”. Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment, LCA, of the waste management of the cable scrap is suggested and explained as a method to analyze the pros and cons of different cable scrap recycling options at hand. Economic and environmental data about different recycling processes and other relevant processes and materials are given. Cable producers can use this data and method to assess the way they deal with the cable plastic waste today and compare it with available alternatives and thus illuminate the improvement potential of recycling cable plastic waste both in an environmental and in an economic sense. The methodology applied consists of: cradle-to-gate LCA for waste material to a recycled material (recyclate); quantifying the climate impact for each step on the waste ladder for the specific waste material; the use of economic and climate impact data in parallel; climate impact presented as a span to portray the insecurities related to which material the waste will replace; and possibilities for do-it-yourself calculations. Potentially, the methodology can be useful also for other waste materials in the future.
