Abstract: This study characterized the histological organization of the neuro-olfactory epithelium of the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Gomori’s trichrome, and Holmes’ silver impregnation. In addition, an induced autofluorescence technique was employed to investigate the distribution of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)-associated fluorescence within the neuro-olfactory epithelium. Histological analysis demonstrated that the neuro-olfactory epithelium is in the dorsocaudal region of the nasal cavity and consists of a pseudostratified sensory epithelium composed of sustentacular cells, basal cells, and bipolar olfactory receptor neurons. Holmes’ staining clearly identified unmyelinated nerve fibers associated with the olfactory nerve. Autofluorescence imaging obtained using two fluorescence filter sets revealed a yellow-to-orange colocalization signal indicative of serotonin (5-HT)-associated fluorescence within the neuro-olfactory epithelium and associated olfactory glands. These findings provide a detailed histological description of the neuro-olfactory epithelium of Desmodus rotundus and support the usefulness of induced autofluorescence as a complementary histological approach for detecting serotonin-associated fluorescence in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues.

Revista Colombiana de Obstetricia y Ginecología , 2009,
Abstract: objective: reviewing the relevant literature concerning medical care and management in a peripartum cardiomyopathy (ppcm) high obstetrical dependence unit. case report: this article presents a case diagnosed as having ppcm on the 4th day postpartum. an echocardiogram revealed a compromised ejection fraction. intensive, appropriate treatment led to survival and recovery of left ventricular systolic function. discussion: ppcm is a rare cardiac disorder which occurs during the peripartum period. it has been recognised as a distinct entity from myocardial infarction. its exact incidence remains unknown but mortality rate ranges from 9% to 56%, most deaths being reported during the first three months postpartum. diagnosis is based upon the clinical presentation of congestive heart failure and objective evidence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction. treatment should include standard therapy for heart failure, thus implying reduced preload, postload and inotropic, diuretic, vasodilator agents and digoxin use. angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (acei) must be included in cmpp postpartum treatment. the outcome of pregnancy depends on functional state and response to initial treatment. the obstetrician plays a fundamental role in a multidisciplinary approach to females suffering from this entity and must coordinate team efforts.

Abstract: five hundred and fifty four school children, 8 to 12 years of age, completed the spanish version of the spence children's anxiety scale (scas), the ita-unam, which measures anxiety in children, and the ces-d measuring depression. the study investigated the structural model of the scas found by spence. two models were tested using confirmatory factor analysis: one 38-item and a second 32-item model, both involving 6 related first-order factors loading in a higher-order factor. the 38-item model provided a reasonably good fit, confirming the one reported by spence. however, the second model provided the best fit of the data. both models coincide with the most common anxiety disorders classified by the dsm-iv-tr. further psychometric analyses reinforced construct validity of the scas and showed acceptable internal consistency.
Tratamiento cognitivo-conductual de la conducta agresiva infantil

Revista mexicana de análisis de la conducta , 2008,
Abstract: the aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of the combination of parental training in behavioral management techniques in children with aggressive behavior along with cognitive behavioral treatment applied to children, as compared to the sole treatment of children. the effects of both type of treatments (combined and treatment alone) at posttest were also analyzed from a traditional statistical approach, as well as from the point of view of its clinical significance. also, the effect of treatment was explored in children's social functioning and parental stress. according to statistical analyses, both conditions decreased children's aggression and social problems as perceived by their parents; however, only combined treatment was clinically significant. parental stress did not change after treatment in either group.
The equilibrium intrinsic crystal-liquid interface of colloids

Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.0904682106
Abstract: We use confocal microscopy to study an equilibrated crystal-liquid interface in a colloidal suspension. Capillary waves roughen the surface, but locally the intrinsic interface is sharply defined. We use local measurements of the structure and dynamics to characterize the intrinsic interface, and different measurements find slightly different widths of this interface. In terms of the particle diameter $d$, this width is either $1.5d$ (based on structural information) or $2.4d$ (based on dynamics), both not much larger than the particle size. This work is the first direct experimental visualization of an equilibrated crystal-liquid interface.

Revista de Biología Tropical , 2011,
Abstract: food habits of puma concolor (carnivora: felidae) in the parque nacional natural puracé,colombia. neotropical puma (puma concolor) diet is scarcely known, in particular that of mountain dwelling individuals from northern south america. this is the first study on pumas from the paramo and the first puma diet analysis for colombia. the puma diet was studied from 2007 to 2009 in the puracé national park in the south colombian andes. paramos are unique neotropical high altitude ecosystems which store and regulate water, and are currently threatened by agricultural expansion and climate change. seven latrines were monitored for three years and scat collected, washed and dried. items in scat such as hair, bones, claws and others were separated. hairs were inspected by microscopy and compared to voucher hair museum specimens. bone fragments, claws and teeth were also compared to museum collections and identified wherever possible. additionally, six cameras were set along game trails to document puma and potential prey presence in the area. food items from five species were identified in 60 puma scats; northern pudu (pudu mephistophiles) was the most important prey in their diet. a total of 354 camera trap-nights photographed a male and female puma, northern pudu and spectacled bear (tremarctos ornatus). the main conclusion suggests a strong dependence of puma on the threatened and mysterious northern pudu in paramo habitats. this behavior might reflect restricted prey availability in the high andes mountains of colombia, and highlights the plasticity in the puma diet. conservation actions in the paramo should thus, focus on focal wild species, and in particularly those that show a relationship, such as the one evidenced here with the dependence of puma on northern pudu. these findings contribute to increase the little known ecology of andean puma populations and the species as a whole in colombia. baseline data on puma prey populations in different ecosystems throughout th

The case of a young woman presenting neurological symptoms during post-natal care (puerperium) is described; she suffered from headaches and seizures after delivery in the obstetric ward. Differential diagnosis included postpartum eclampsia or infection. More exhaustive evaluation revealed cerebral venous sinus trombosis (CVST); her state improved until hospital discharge after 15 days and recovery of her state of awareness following anticoagulant therapy.
