Panda as Peacemaker: China, International Dispute Resolution, and the Founding of the International Organization for Mediation  [PDF]
Kunyang Li, Penghe Shi
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2025.164112
Abstract: The Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation, signed on May 30, 2025, in Hong Kong SAR by 33 founding states, created the first permanent intergovernmental body dedicated solely to mediation. Drawing on China’s mediation experience and its cultural emphasis on harmony, the Organization provides a platform for disputes between states, state-foreign nationals, and private parties in international commerce. The Convention defines mediation, establishes safeguards, specifies case scope, and creates a cross-border enforcement mechanism for settlement agreements. By diversifying pathways for dispute settlement, enhancing the voice of developing countries, and fostering the development of mediation, the Organization provides a flexible and reliable framework, representing a major advance in global dispute resolution.
News Values and the Media Coverage of the Syrian Crisis: Informational Relevance and National Framing in Georgian Television News (2012-2016)  [PDF]
Maia Shamanauri, Khatuna Maisashvili
Advances in Journalism and Communication (AJC) , 2026, DOI: 10.4236/ajc.2026.143011
Abstract: This study examines how the Syrian crisis was represented in Georgian television news through the lens of news values, informational relevance, and perceptions of geographical and political proximity. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Galtung and Ruge’s theory of news values, later refinements proposed by Montgomery, and scholarship on relevance and proximity, the study explores how global conflicts are translated into national news agendas within a small media system. The empirical analysis is based on expert assessments of the cumulative television coverage of the Syrian crisis by Georgia’s two leading broadcasters—the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) and Rustavi 2—during the period 2012-2016. Using a mixed-methods design, the study combines qualitative in-depth interviews with political and media experts and a quantitative Thurstone-type scaling procedure. The findings demonstrate that experts perceived the Syrian crisis to have been predominantly reframed through domestic relevance—particularly via the figure of Tarkhan Batirashvili and the Pankisi Gorge—rather than through its geopolitical, historical, or humanitarian dimensions. According to the expert assessments, television coverage was fragmented, episodic, and largely deprived of broader analytical context, reflecting limited perceptions of the global relevance of the conflict within editorial decision-making. The study contributes to the literature on international news mediation by demonstrating how small media systems domesticate distant conflicts and how professional news judgments shape perceptions of informational relevance in foreign news coverage.
International Commercial Mediation at a Time of Uncertainty
—The Italian Case
 [PDF]

Giovanni Matteucci
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2025, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2025.163099
Abstract: There are at least four alternatives to manage conflicts: negotiation, mediation, arbitration, litigation. In negotiation, the conflicting parties try to find a solution by themselves. In mediation, a neutral third party facilitates the communication between/among the disputing parties, but does not have the power to impose a solution. In arbitration a private judge, chosen by the conflicting parties, enforces the law and imposes a solution. In litigation, a public court finds and imposes a solution. There is a problem in international disputes: the enforceability of the final result. The rules for the recognition and enforcement of a foreign judgment in civil and commercial matters of international litigation are laid down by the Hague Convention, 1992. The rules for international arbitration are written in the United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, signed in New York in 1958. The Uncitral Conciliation Rules were approved in 1980 and the Model Law on International Commercial Conciliation in 2002. International arbitration has gained momentum. But, in disputes where “time is money” or it is necessary to maintain ongoing business relationships, the conciliation/mediation procedures started to be used more and more often. They are confidential, flexible, quick and cheap. The Singapore Convention on Mediation (SCM) 7.8.2019 ruled the enforceability of the mediation agreements. On 30.05.2025, it has been signed the Convention of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed). Hybrid procedures (med-arb; arb-med-arb; etc.) have been used in several countries, especially in South East Asia. What is the scenario, for international commercial mediation, in a situation of relevant geopolitical and trade uncertainty? And what about Italy, likely the first western jurisdiction to introduce mandatory mediation in its contemporary legal system?

Advances in Journalism and Communication (AJC) , 2023, DOI: 10.4236/ajc.2023.113013
Abstract: Under the dual influence of the current international geopolitical environment and post-epidemic economic recovery, the international public opinion communication environment has become complex and volatile. Countries around the world are trying to maintain their national image so that they can gain strong national discourse and credibility both internationally and domestically. Based on this, this paper will take the communication theory and media economy theory related to international communication as the entry point, apply survey and literature research to analyze its strengths and weaknesses, to find his content heavy propaganda, old-fashioned language style and other problems in terms of channel positioning and operation strategy. Through the research, the author proposes constructive suggestions such as the need for multi-faceted and multi-angle propaganda, and the need for more relaxed and lively reporting language. It is hoped that it will serve as a reference for future academic research.

- , 2018, DOI: 10.1177/1077699018754909
Abstract: Analyzing 50 years’ of New York Times international news coverage (N = 20,765), this study extends research on the “shrinking international news hole,” levels of press freedom, agent (e.g., Times correspondent), and “borrowed” news—information gleaned from local media, including social media. Data show a recent, growing role for social media and an increase in news borrowing, while foreign coverage declined; slight resurgence in foreign coverage during the last quarter-century; reduced wire copy use but increased correspondent news borrowing; and increased coverage of but decreased news borrowing in news from non-free nations. Borrowing from social media was greatest in non-free nations
Reporting Activities of Chinese Correspondents in Japan from the 1960s and 1970s  [PDF]

Advances in Journalism and Communication (AJC) , 2022, DOI: 10.4236/ajc.2022.102008
Abstract: Based on the framework of factors of the news selection process, this research discusses the news production of the Chinese correspondents stationed in Japan in 1960s and 1970s. The framework distinguishes among four analytic levels: institutional context, organizational routine, individual consciousness and the external reporting environment. By analyzing the historical materials such as memoirs and notes of Chinese correspondents, this study found that Chinese correspondents in Japan determined the direction of reporting activities by following the central leaders’ instructions and the central government’s documents. They identified specific news stories by conforming organizational routines and reporting guidelines. Moreover, they wrote the news story by integrating journalistic professionalism and personal recognition and understanding towards Japan. At last, they have gained the convenience from the people who are friendly to new China, whereas they still meet restrictions in news gathering and reporting in Japan. The reporting activities of Chinese correspondents promoted the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Japan, which is in line with the needs of the foreign policy and the domestic policy of Chinese government in the early days of new China. The analysis offers a new perspective to summarize rules of international news production mechanism of Chinese media.

Newspapers Coverage of Spain and the United States: A Comparative Analysis  [PDF]
Antonio V. Menéndez Alarcón
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2012.21009
Abstract: This article assesses the content of foreign news coverage in the United States and Spain. It draws on content analysis of two U.S. and two Spanish newspapers over a 28-month period, during 2005-2007 and in 2009. The results show that the content of these newspapers tends to be more negative when covering politics. However, there was a major change in the type of coverage in the Spanish newspapers from the period 2005-2007 to 2009. Coverage of U.S. politics in 2009 was much more positive than in the previous period studied. These findings suggest that newspapers contribute to an overall unfavorable representation of these countries for their respective populations. Also, when covering international news, newspapers are less independent from their government agendas than they claim; supporting critical research findings that mainstream media is vulnerable to “news management” by the government.

BRAZIL AND LATIN AMERICA IN THE TELEREALITY FROM DAVOS TO BELéM: The journalistic coverage of the Brazilian newscasts
Beatriz Becker,Juliana Teixeira
Brazilian Journalism Research , 2011,
Abstract: Television and news reports function as fundamental tools in order to amplify or restrict public interest. Journalistic discourses are strategic as mediators among the different powers and the civic society, and contribute to maintaining or transforming social practices, especially the narratives of the TV news. This work aims at identifying how television news programs build political dimensions, identities and Latin-American physical and symbolic territories, starting from an analysis covering two events that marked the international agenda in 2009: the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the World Social Forum in Belém, as treated by the most watched Brazilian television news programs.
