Faroese Oral Tradition and Icelandic Saga: The case of ásmund Cycle
Chiara Benati
Brathair , 2009,
Abstract: The character ásmund – Faroese ásmundur – appears at least in six Faroese heroic ballads: Gríms ríma (CCF nr. 52), Heljars kv ei (CCF nr. 63), Frúgvin Olrina (CCF nr. 81), Sniolvs kv ei (CCF nr. 91), Tíeriks kongs ríma (CCF nr. 97) and Torbj rn Bekil (CCF nr. 98). In addition, ásmund, the Champion-Killer, is also mentioned in the so-called Dv rgamoy ballads (CCF 6, 7, 8, 9), a large group of texts dealing with all the three thematic cores which, in Faroese oral tradition, are connected to the character Sigurd of the Nibelung tradition, the Dietrich epic and the ásmund tradition itself.A systematic study of the ásmund matter in the Faroese oral tradition and its relation to the Icelandic ásmundar saga kappabana has never been conducted. The present study aims, therefore, to analyse the reception of the ásmund narrative in the Faroes, in the basis of all the texts recorded. The image we get from this analysis shows the complexity of the development of this narrative’s material, which, far from being linear, is repeatedly altered and contaminated with other heroic traditions.
Harmful Memories—Present Dynamics: The Heroic Helper’s Effect on Collective and Individual Responsibility and Prejudice  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2019.79014
Abstract: This study was aimed at testing if exposure to a narrative about a heroic helper, can increment responsibility—taking about past ingroup wrongdoings and reduce prejudice and intergroup hostility in the present. We used the narrative of a Hungarian hero in an experiment who acted for targets of the Holocaust in Hungary, and measured if this narrative might increase collective responsibility for the Holocaust, decrease Hungarians’ hostile attitudes towards the Jewish minority, and this effect could be expanded to ongoing conflicts with other minorities. We used an experimental group (N = 99) exposed to the narrative, and a control group (N = 101) that was not. Both groups completed a test-battery measuring national identification, empathy, responsibility-taking, and prejudice. Data were analyzed with SPSS, and open-ended questions were content—analyzed by four independent coders. Results show that learning about a heroic helper increased acceptance of responsibility for the Holocaust and empathic abilities, whereas these effects were not generalized to current intergroup relations.

Poems From/de Infernal: Romantic
Vek Lewis
PORTAL : Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies , 2008,
Abstract: These poems came about when, living in a house in Xalapa, Mexico, without a stereo and no guitar or piano to speak of, I had to invent my own music. Love is infernal, not eternal. The image of the beloved that betrays you, always an image that is both iconic and sacrilegious, an internal and infernal ecstasy that the bolero gives life to. I only realised afterwards that I had written an update of this Caribbean-Mexican genre, a mi manera. So it seemed suitable that they should be in Spanish and English (the latter my first language), exorcising both los demonios de la mirada amada y los demonios de la lengua. These pieces come from a collection of erotic poetry accompanied by interpretive images that will be released by an art press in Spain in 2009. Infernal/romantic is one half of a collaborative project between myself, the Madrid-based Chilean poet, Violeta Medina, and several artists. The collection speaks to desires that are clearly other and demonic.
A Comparative Reading of Sejanus and Cato  [PDF]
Hui Guo, Qing Wang
Advances in Literary Study (ALS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/als.2015.32007
Abstract: It seems that William Shakespeare’s Macbeth bears more similarities to Ben Jonson’s Sejanus. However, the two tragedies are even more different than Joseph Addison’s Cato and Jonson’s Sejanus as in Macbeth witchcraft and violent murder are involved. And Macbeth’s wife is even more vicious than the protagonist. Undeniably, there are more differences between Ben Jonson’s Sejanus and Joseph Addison’s Cato. The themes are different as Jonson’s Sejanus focuses on the protagonist’s conspiracy to the emperor Tiberius while Addison’s Cato praises the hero’s nobility and wisdom, though both die in the end of the tragedies. Triangular love is woven and being one of the main themes in Cato while adultery takes a small portion in Sejanus. Despite of the differences in these two tragedies, and the fact that the two dramatists belong to different eras, there are five main similarities between them: both tragedies being entitled with their protagonists’ names and setting in the ancient Rome, traitor ministers and conspiracy taking great proportion in the plots, the falls of the traitors in both tragedies, and the conflicts between the noble and evil parties. One can hardly fail to observe the judgments of the heroes by the characters within the tragedies. These similarities between the themes and structures of the plots lead to the similarities between the portrayals of the characters. Both Sejanus and Cato are heroic plays and political tragedies of Rome. The textual comparison between these two tragedies reveals an obvious influence of Jonson to Addison, who is also creative and develops this type of tragedy with the plot of triangular love.
Selatan—Sur—South
Ian Campbell
PORTAL : Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies , 2008,
Abstract: Kumpulan puisi dalam Bahasa Indonesia oleh IAN CAMPBELL/Poetry compilation in Indonesian by the Australian poet Ian Campbell. This collection of poems explores the notion of the 'south' from locations in Indonesia, Australia, Chile and Argentina, locations in which the poems were written. Explaining his topographical approach in these poems, Campbell says: "One of the poems, titled in the Indonesian original 'Lejano sur' (Ke Kejauhan Selatan), appears alongside an English version, called 'Further South.' This short poem takes Borges's short story 'Sur' and a reference to Avenida Rivadavia that he includes in 'Sur' as its starting point for crossing into 'the South' from the centre of Buenos Aires. I then explore ideas of southness - as paradoxically moving 'south' away from North into a region where 'the natural elements are supreme'. Recent Chilean poetry eg 'Despedidas Antárticas' by Julio Carrasco (2006) picks up this idea of 'towards the essence' better than recent Australian poetry. Only Tom Griffiths, the historian, has recently explored this in prose. There are Borgesian images of dust/lack of clarity, then we head into a region where eg Torre del Paine, admittedly on the Chilean side of the Andes, come to mind. The stress on the elements - stone, wind, fire - is an allusion to the way Indonesian poet, Acep Zamzam Noor, portrays these elements in a poem 'Batu dan Angin' (Stone and Wind) which has strong sufi/meditative elements. We head into the polar area, which because of climate change, is now melting. But there is also an allusion to Douglas Stewart's play 'Fire on the Snow' about the 1911 Scott expedition and the value of 'human failure'. Even the 'essence' is melting and is no longer stable."
The Poetry of Jeroen Mettes
Samuel Vriezen
continent. , 2012,
Abstract: Five years after his suicide, Jeroen Mettes' collected poetry has been published. With this introductory essay are excerpts from Mettes' path-clearing N30. As Vriezen explains, Mettes read poetry for political reasons: to see whether poetry could offer a way to deal with a political world he detested. His poetry is an attempt to bridge the divide between critical theory and the practice of social life.

La visión heroica sobre la independencia de Antioquia
Ospina Echeverri,Marta Cecilia;
Estudios Políticos , 2010,
Abstract: it is evident the predominance of the heroic visions on the independence of antioquia. the historians ascribed to the academia antioque?a de historia, the heirs of a historiography tradition that emphasizes on illustrious personages, and conclusive moments of the regional independence, have been compromised in this labor of turning someone into a hero. heroes are not always military men; some priests, a limited number of women, and few public men are joined to this select group. according to this historiography, both contributed to make feasible the campaign of emancipation: the priests harangue the population, they model the project of a christian republic, and they also gave economic contributions; the women educated the heroes with love and abnegation, and they waited their return from the war in a marian resignation; the politicians helped to the new republican constitutional order with their knowledge and patriotic power.
