News Values and the Media Coverage of the Syrian Crisis: Informational Relevance and National Framing in Georgian Television News (2012-2016)  [PDF]

Advances in Journalism and Communication (AJC) , 2026, DOI: 10.4236/ajc.2026.143011
Abstract: This study examines how the Syrian crisis was represented in Georgian television news through the lens of news values, informational relevance, and perceptions of geographical and political proximity. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Galtung and Ruge’s theory of news values, later refinements proposed by Montgomery, and scholarship on relevance and proximity, the study explores how global conflicts are translated into national news agendas within a small media system. The empirical analysis is based on expert assessments of the cumulative television coverage of the Syrian crisis by Georgia’s two leading broadcasters—the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) and Rustavi 2—during the period 2012-2016. Using a mixed-methods design, the study combines qualitative in-depth interviews with political and media experts and a quantitative Thurstone-type scaling procedure. The findings demonstrate that experts perceived the Syrian crisis to have been predominantly reframed through domestic relevance—particularly via the figure of Tarkhan Batirashvili and the Pankisi Gorge—rather than through its geopolitical, historical, or humanitarian dimensions. According to the expert assessments, television coverage was fragmented, episodic, and largely deprived of broader analytical context, reflecting limited perceptions of the global relevance of the conflict within editorial decision-making. The study contributes to the literature on international news mediation by demonstrating how small media systems domesticate distant conflicts and how professional news judgments shape perceptions of informational relevance in foreign news coverage.

Abstract: This work comprises a media study through the discussion of the complex interactions between politics and television viewing the representations of the social events produced by the news. The study of the media coverage of Deputy Roberto Jefferson’s declarations to the Ethic Commission, through the registration of the current national television news, including Jornal da Band, Jornal da Record and Jornal Nacional, proposes an analysis of their reports and their ways to reassert the accusations and their effects. Each edition of the television news re ects a certain version of daily social reality. Assuming television news as a singular way of scattering information and presently the most shocking information product we propose an investigation on the hierarchy of values that is considered to be contained within the media speeches. Concepts and identities are constructed through an intentional use of the language and narrative techniques. This study also intends to point out the responsibility of journalists and researchers whose professional exercising functions work as opinion markers and/or articulators of speci c ways to understand the country and the world.

Open Journal of Political Science (OJPS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/ojps.2019.92017
Abstract: This study contributes a historical perspective to communication that surrounds health care policy. The importance of the role of media in the establishment of public policy is highlighted, as well as an administration’s ability to educate the media and public about proposed legislation. Using content analysis, the researchers examined how White House news releases and television news stories represented the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) from its initial discussion in January 2009 through March of 2012. The results showed neither the White House news releases, nor the network television news stories provided the public with a comprehensive outline of the PPACA. Both the Obama administration and the media presented the PPACA as an important current issue, but both failed to define it in ways that made the legislation accessible to the public. The lack of definitive information created confusion for the public and this health care policy remains a controversial piece of legislation which has been threatened with repeal.

Abstract: Sources of information used by mass media for presenting events are among the key criteria in evaluating news credibility, whether the credibility is perceived from recipients’ or professionals’ perspectives. The aim of this research is to determine the credibility of TV news in terms of professional imperatives of objectivity, whereas the majority of research on this issue centers on media credibility evaluated from the perspective of the intended audiences. Considering the fact that audience perception is strongly influenced by its (dis)affinity for a specific media, particularly in B&H, we consider the analysis from the professional standards to be more objective. The goal of the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contests emitted on primetime news programs of two public and one commercial TV stations in B&H is to determine how credible and reliable the news was as well as its overall objectivity and fairness. The results reveal that the differences were not most evident between the public and commercial TV stations, but rather between the entity televisions despite the fact that they belong to the same RTV system. Coverage of the same events on the three TV stations indicates that the reports were based primarily on one-sided and biased sources.
Mediatization as a combination of push and pull forces: Examples during the 2015 UK general election campaign

Abstract: This article introduces a dual perspective to the study of mediatization of politics, a political actor-centric and a media actor-centric perspective. It applies both perspectives to a case study of the 2015 UK General Election campaign. The media actor-centric perspective focuses on push forces of mediatization, manifested in proactive, interventionist reporting methods. The political actor-centric perspective focuses on pull forces of mediatization, referring to how candidates and parties purposefully draw media logic into the political world in order to achieve better their campaign goals. We argue that the Conservative Party and Labour Party, when exposed to equal push forces, employed different pull strategies in the 2015 UK General Election Campaign. The article uses a set of five indicators to recognize push forces that focus on the style of questions used by journalists when interrogating politicians on TV election programmes (reflecting media actor-centric mediatization). It finds clear indications of assertiveness, adversarialism and accountability in the news approach of the BBC. To recognize pull forces, the article uses a set of seven indicators developed from the literature on campaign professionalism (reflecting political actor-centric mediatization) and finds a considerable imbalance in the effective use of pull strategies between the Conservative and Labour Parties. This latter point leads to what we call lop-sided mediatization. The concluding section discusses inplications for mediatization research in times of Brexit and Trumpism

COMPARISON OF BBC’S AND HRT’S NEWS PROGRAMMES
Jandri?, Ilija
- , 2004,
Abstract: Sa?etak How much does the HRT fulfils its function of a public service and what is the quality of its news programme? The author gets an answer to these questions by means of a comparative analysis of some news broadcasts by the HRT and the BBC in June and July 2003. The analysis was carried out within the postgraduate study in TV journalism at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Although Croatia and Great Britain have different political and media traditions and are immensely different regarding their media market size, certain professional standards should be the same in all newsrooms, especially on public televisions. By comparing the structure of certain news programmes, the news slots, the dominant topics, the reporting style and the news presentation, the author has noticed some patterns of mistakes in the HRT programmes; using the BBC as a model, he offers some feasible solutions regarding the HRT capacities and the habits of the Croatian viewers
TV News: The Quest for Values
Peri?in, Tena
- , 2008,
Abstract: Sa?etak The Croatian market of television news programs is an arena where public and commercial broadcasters wage a war for ratings. Every evening the Croatian Television (HRT, a public broadcaster) and the commercial broadcasters Nova TV and RTL produce and air central daily news shows that strive to be the main source of information for most Croatian citizens. First of all, our aim here is to establish the main principles of news selection for central TV-news shows in Croatia. The working hypothesis is that in the period from 2005 until 2008 the HRT’s central news show Dnevnik has undergone significant changes with respect to the selection of topics, news values and reporting styles and its news selection leads us to believe that it is getting closer to the commercial broadcasters. Although the HRT’s Dnevnik is the news show with the highest average ratings in Croatia, it has lately registered a drop. This trend is partially caused by the development of new media and internet portals that provide instant access to the latest news, instead of waiting for a central TV-news show. But this lack of interest in the central news show of the public TV-broadcaster can also be interpreted in the context of the sway of audiences toward topics and presentation styles that are more typical of commercial broadcasters. The conducted study, an analysis of the information value and topic structure of television news by applying content analysis method, has shown that the central news show of the public broadcaster is getting closer to its commercial counterparts, as far as news selection is concerned
BRAZIL AND LATIN AMERICA IN THE TELEREALITY FROM DAVOS TO BELéM: The journalistic coverage of the Brazilian newscasts
Beatriz Becker,Juliana Teixeira
Brazilian Journalism Research , 2011,
Abstract: Television and news reports function as fundamental tools in order to amplify or restrict public interest. Journalistic discourses are strategic as mediators among the different powers and the civic society, and contribute to maintaining or transforming social practices, especially the narratives of the TV news. This work aims at identifying how television news programs build political dimensions, identities and Latin-American physical and symbolic territories, starting from an analysis covering two events that marked the international agenda in 2009: the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the World Social Forum in Belém, as treated by the most watched Brazilian television news programs.
