Anatomical variation of the origin of the right lingual artery
Jadhav SD,Ambali MP,Patil RJ
International Journal of Anatomical Variations , 2011,
Abstract: This paper presents and describes an anatomical variation of the lingual artery originating from the right common carotid artery. This variation was found in a male cadaver at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed University, Karad (MS), India, during routine dissection classes for medical undergraduate students. On right side the lingual artery was originated from common carotid artery 6 mm below its bifurcation. In this case, we reported high division of common carotid artery at the tip of the styloid process. However, arterial branching pattern and point of bifurcation on left side were as usual.

- , 2002,
Abstract: Sa?etak Ten adult mules were used in this study for gross anatomy, light and electron microscopy. The branching of the terminal portion of the common carotid artery was found to be similar to that of the horse. The carotid body of the mule is compact and located at the angle of bifurcation of the internal and external carotid arteries. Groups of cells surrounded by connective tissue capsule were clear, with light as well as electron microscopy. The amounts of electron dense granules differ in the two cell types of the carotid body (Types I and II). The carotid sinus is located at the origin of the internal carotid artery. Both the carotid sinus and the carotid body were described in detail, with their blood and nerve supply in the mule and compared to other domestic animals

International Journal of Biological and Medical Research , 2011,
Abstract: : During the routine dissection of neck region in an approx 50 year old male cadaver in the department of Anatomy at Maharajah’s Institute Of Medical Sciences, Vizianagaram, a rare unilateral variation in the branching pattern of common carotid artery and external carotid artery in association with abnormal curving and looping of Internal carotid artery on right side was noticed. Knowledge of variations in ICA and the origin, course and branches of ECA is important for surgeons and also for the radiologist to interpret carotid system imaging.
Correlation of atherosclerotic changes in peripheral arteries with pathological involvement of aortic arch in coronary bypass patients

Tehran University Medical Journal , 2010,
Abstract: "nBackground: A correlation between coronary artery disease (CAD) and atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries and the determination of noninvasive indexes for its existence and extent have been sought by many researchers. Some studies report that the intima-media thickness (IMT) of peripheral arteries could play this role. This study evaluated the correlation between the IMTs of common carotid and common femoral arteries and the degree of atherosclerosis in aortic arch and to evaluate the severity of CAD in candidates of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)."n "nMethods: In a cross-sectional analytic-descriptive study, The severity of CAD, the grade of atherosclerosis of the aortic arch, and the IMTs of the common carotid and common femoral arteries were determined."n "nResults: There was a significant weak positive correlation between the IMT of common carotid artery (ρ = 0.193, p = 0.039) and common femoral artery (ρ = 0.206, p = 0.028) with the number of involved carotid vessels; the mean of these two parameters was not significantly different between the three CAD groups. There was not any significant relation between the IMTs of common carotid and common femoral arteries with the severity of atherosclerosis in the aortic arch too. There was not any significant relation between the presences of atherosclerotic plaque in the common carotid or the common femoral arteries with the severity of CAD. The severe atherosclerosis of the aortic arch was significantly higher in patients with three vessel disease."n "nConclusion: According to our results, the IMTs of common carotid and/or common femoral arteries may increase with the severity of CAD; however, these parameters are not a surrogate for predicting the CAD severity.

Journal of Diabetes Mellitus (JDM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jdm.2011.12004
Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of subclinical atherosclerosis, evaluated by carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in subjects with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 167 subjects, 50 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic subjects and 117 non-diabetic subjects were included in the study. Obese and overweight newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients were matched for age and BMI with obese and overweight non-diabetic subjects. Only postmenopausal women were selected. The following biomarkers were analyzed: fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, fasting proinsulin, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, adiponectin, leptin, hs-CRP, urine albumin/creatinine ratio. 75 g oral glucose tolerance test was performed in all subjects. Ultrasound imaging was used to evaluate IMT of the common carotid artery. Results: CIMT was greater in newly diagnosed type 2 patients compared to non-diabetic subjects. When analyzed by BMI, the difference regarding CIMT between diabetic and non-diabetic subjects was significant only in overweight subjects, in both sexes. In univariate analysis in men with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, CIMT was positively correlated with age, SBP, triglycerides, leptin and negatively correlated with HDL-cholesterol and in women CIMT was positively correlated with SBP and leptin. Independent determinants of CIMT in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes were in men age (β = 0.556, p = 0.0028) and log leptin (β = 0.393, p = 0.049) and in women systolic blood pressure (β = 0.48, p = 0.026). Conclusions: Subclinical atherosclerosis is present in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic subjects. Body fat accumulation in men and hypertension in postmenopausal women have a primary role in increase carotid intima-media thickness.

- , 2018, DOI: 10.4103/apc.APC_56_17
Abstract: An adolescent patient with a previous history of surgical repair for interrupted aortic arch type B presented with an asymptomatic, saccular pseudoaneurysm of the proximal, common left carotid artery, identified on a follow-up magnetic resonance angiography of the thoracic large vessels. The pseudoaneurysm was successfully excluded with a covered stent. Clinical and radiological follow-up after 2 years was uneventful
Clinically relevant variations of the superior thyroid artery: An anatomic guide for neck surgeries
Takkallapalli Anitha,Dattatray Dombe,Krishnamurthy Asha,Sanjay Kalbande
International Journal of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: The superior thyroid artery (STA) is the chief artery which supplies blood to the thyroid gland, upper part of larynx and the neck region. The knowledge of variations in the origin of STA is important for surgical procedures in the neck region, such as radical neck dissection, catheterization, reconstruction of aneurysm, carotid endarterectomy and intervention radiology. The surgical anatomy of the STA was studied in 50 formalin preserved cadavers between the age of 40 to 60 years. A detailed review of literature was done to enlighten the surgical, radiological and clinical importance.

Abstract: This pilot study evaluated associations between carotid wall echogenicity, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, and three markers of smoking heaviness in a cohort of active smokers. Common carotid artery (CCA) gray-scale median (GSM) values were measured from sonographic images. Univariable correlations and exploratory multivariable models were used to determine associations between CCA GSM, CVD risk factors, and measures of smoking heaviness. CCA GSM was measured in 162 smokers and was correlated inversely with cigarettes smoked/d (r = ?0.16, P = .048); pack-years (r = ?0.204, P = .009); CVD risk factors such as age, male sex, waist circumference, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (all P ≤ .03); and positively with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < .001). Associations between CCA GSM and smoking heaviness markers were not statistically significant after adjustment for traditional risk factors. The results from this pilot study demonstrate the feasibility of measuring the GSM value of the CCA far wall and its association with measures of smoking heaviness and traditional CVD risk factors among current smokers
