Knowledge & Health Journal , 2011,
Abstract: Introduction: Psychological therapy can have significant effects on improving the general health in asthmatic patients. The purpose of this research is to study the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) therapy in general health of asthmatic patients. Methods: In this experimental study, 24 female asthmatic patients were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The data was gathered using the Global Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), completed in pretest, posttest and follow-up stages by the participants. While CBSM therapy was conducted in 8 sessions on the experimental group, the control group received common medical treatments and meanwhile was laid in waiting list for psychological therapy. The obtained data was analyzed with SPSS software, mainly through the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: The findings showed that mean scores of general health were decreased significantly in post-test and follow-up phases in experiment group (pre-test: 37.83 post-test: 30.33 follow-up: 35.66) compared to control group (pre-test: 38.17 post-test: 39.91 follow-up: 41.66) (P=0.0001). Conclusion: The results of present study demonstrate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral stress management therapy in the improvement of general health of female asthmatic patients. Due to the decrease of mental health in asthmatic patients and the effectiveness of mental intervention, special attention should be given to psychological treatment in this group of patients.

- , 2013, DOI: 10.4172/2167-0870.1000134
Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of using supportive interview and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for stress management in patients with cancer and understand the psychological issues in this group. In addition, it aimed to study the roles of and issues faced by nurses in the psycho-oncology field. Methods: The study was conducted between August 2010 and September 2011 at University hospitals in Tokyo. Patients with cancer (n = 20), currently undergoing treatment, were interviewed for approximately 60 min. Interviews were conducted by a certified nurse specialist (CNS) in psychiatric mental health nursing, who employed supportive psychological techniques and CBT cognitive behavioral therapy to examine individual patient’s psychological problems and stresses. Each patient was individually interviewed on three occasions over two months. We measured changes in anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and current quality of life (QOL) before and after the interviews. Results: In total 15 patients were evaluated; 5 patients were excluded because of clinical deterioration. The most common issue during the supportive interview was anxiety over treatment and cancer recurrence, reported in 8 patients (66.7%). In addition, concerns over solving problems associated with new medical treatments were frequently reported. Conclusion: This study suggests that supportive interviews and those using CBT cognitive behavioral therapy conducted by a CNS certified nurse specialist in psychiatric mental health nursing were effective, particularly in improving anxiety, depression, and the QOL quality of life in patients with cancer. In the area of psycho-oncology, cancer-specific psychological needs should be understood and incorporated into nursing practice to improve overall psychological care and to help build nurses’ skills.

Abstract: Background: Depressive disorder is often accompanied by physiological changes that may adversely affect the course of medical illness, including an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines. Methods: We examine the effects of religious cognitive behavioral therapy (RCBT) vs. conventional CBT (CCBT) on pro-/anti-inflammatory indicators and stress hormones in 132 individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic medical illness who were recruited into a multi-site randomized clinical trial. Biomarkers (C-reactive protein and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-12-p70), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL1ra, IL-4, IL-10), and stress hormones (urinary cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine) were assessed at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Differential effects of baseline religiosity on treatment response were also examined, along with effects of religiosity on changes in biomarkers over time independent of treatment group. Biomarker levels were log transformed where possible to normalize distributions. Mixed models were used to examine trajectories of change. Results: CRP increased and IL-4, IL-10, and epinephrine decreased over time, mostly in the opposite direction expected (except epinephrine). No significant difference between RCBT and CCBT was found on average trajectory of change in any biomarkers. Religiosity interacted with treatment group in effects on IL-6, such that CCBT was more effective than RCBT in lowering lL-6 in those with low religiosity whereas RCBT appeared to be more effective than CCBT in those with high religiosity. Higher baseline religiosity also tended to predict an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines INF-γ

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effects of cognitive behavioral intervention on psychological stress response in breast cancer patients by cognitive behavioral intervention in breast cancer patients. Methods: Adopting the random comparison method, 100 patients with breast cancer were divided into comparison group and intervention group by 50 cases. The intervention group underwent cognitive behavioral intervention at the same time as the comparison group only received conventional treatment without cognitive behavioral intervention. Two groups of breast cancer patients were enrolled in the general questionnaire, the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) within one week after admission and one month after treatment to understand the psychological stress levels of the two groups. Results: There was no significant difference in the scores of SAS and MCMQ between the intervention group and the comparison group before intervention (P > 0.05). But after intervention, the scores of SAS and MCMQ in the comparison group were significantly higher than those in the intervention group (P < 0.05); thus, the differences of SAS and MCMQ factors before and after intervention in the intervention group were statistically significant (P < 0.05), and there was no significant difference in the factors of SAS and MCMQ before and after intervention in the comparison group (P > 0.05). It shows that the implementation of cognitive behavioral intervention therapy for breast cancer patients has the effect of improving their psychological status. Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral intervention therapy combined with psychology for breast cancer patients can effectively reduce their stress level, improve mental health status and improve their positive coping ability.

Abstract:

Present study is designed to investigate the effects of stress management training by using cognitive be- havioral method on anxiety and depression among parents of children with mental retardation. This study is a quasi-experiment that designed as pretest and post-test with control group. The statistical population of study included all parents with mental retarded children from city of Babol in 2011-2012. Sample population was including 40 parents that were selected cluster sampling and allocated in experimental and control groups (20 parents for experimental group and 20 for control group). The experimental group trained during 10 sessions of stress management with method of cognitive-behavioral, whereas during this period the control group did not received any intervention. Both groups in pre-test and post-test assessed by using anxiety and depression scale and results were analyzed by using independent t-test. The results of t-test showed that there were no significant differences between two groups in pre-test, but stress man- agement training with method of cognitive-behavioral in experimental group were significantly reduced scores of anxiety and depression. The results of this study showed that stress management by using cogni- tive-behavioral method decreases depression and anxiety scores compared with the control group. Due to psychological problems of parents with mental retarded children, cognitive-behavioral stress management training program can be used as intervention method to reduce anxiety and depression in order to decrease vulnerability.

Abstract: Current research indicates that stress problems primarily could be conceptualized as deficiencies in recovery and recuperation between stress periods. Accordingly, interventions should put more emphasis on this aspect. A group based intervention program focusing exclusively on recovery behavior in everyday life was evaluated in this quasi-experimental, waiting-list control group study, where the control group was also treated in a second phase. Thirty-two self-referred female subjects, considering themselves in need of treatment for stress related health problems, were available for analyzes. Fifteen of these constituted the first phase treatment group (INT), while the remaining 17 subjects were placed on waiting list (WLC). Adding a few late applicants leaved 20 subjects later treated in the second intervention phase. Significant and clinically meaningful positive effects emerged in the INT—compared to the WLC-group on recovery behaviors, stress—and recovery experiences, as well as on burnout symptoms, worry, anxiety and depression. Secondary analyzes of all treated subjects indicated that the positive change the primary clinical endpoint was predicted by the increase in frequency of recovery behaviors and by the decrease in the worry level. Thus, the present intervention model merits further research with more rigorous experimental design as well as with follow-up assessments.

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effect of cognitive behavioral intervention on nurses with PTSD by using cognitive behavioral intervention. Methods: The subjects were selected by randomized control method, and the PTSD nurses were divided into control group (n = 30) and intervention group (n = 30). The intervention group used cognitive behavioral intervention; the control group did not use cognitive behavioral intervention. Nurses with PTSD in the two groups completed the basic situation survey, medical coping questionnaire (MCMQ) and anxiety self-rating form (SAS) psychological scale one month later. Results: There was no significant difference in MCMQ and SAS scores between the two groups before intervention (P > 0.05). After intervention, the scores of MCMQ and SAS in the intervention group were compared with the scores of MOCQ and SAS in the control group. The scores of the control group after intervention were significantly higher than those of the intervention group, with statistical significance (P < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in MCMQ and SAS in the intervention group before and after intervention (P < 0.05). There was no statistical significance in the control group before and after intervention (P > 0.05). It shows that cognitive behavioral intervention therapy has the effect and value of improving the psychological status of nurses with PTSD. Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral intervention therapy combined with psychology for nurses with PTSD can effectively relieve their stress level, relieve their mood, and improve their positive coping ability and work efficiency.

Abstract: The advent of virtual reality (VR) has introduced new avenues for treating mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. These conditions have traditionally been managed with pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. However, these treatments often present issues such as medicinal side effects, accessibility barriers like high cost, and geographical constraints. This study explores the potential of VR and metaverse to offer more accessible and engaging treatment alternatives. By analyzing the service models of XRHealth, Innerworld, and PsyTechVR, we aim to critically evaluate the efficacy of these technologies in mental health treatments and analyze associated challenges including accessibility, side effects, privacy, and security concerns. The findings aim to contribute to the ongoing discussion on digital health innovations and prescription digital therapy by providing a comprehensive analysis of cutting-edge virtual reality and metaverse technologies in overcoming traditional treatment barriers in treating mental health.
