Abstract: Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of herbal decoction for managing cancer-related fatigue in chemotherapy patients with colorectal malignancies. Methods: From January to December 2024, 120 chemotherapy patients with colorectal malignancies at a tertiary hospital’s oncology department were randomly divided into a control group (60 cases) and an observation group (60 cases). The control group received standard chemotherapy care and health education, while the observation group received herbal decoction therapy in addition to standard care. Both groups were compared for pre- and post-intervention changes in cancer-related fatigue scores (Piper Fatigue Scale, PFS), quality of life scores (EORTC QLQ-C30), and adverse reaction occurrence. Results: After 4 weeks of intervention, the observation group showed significantly lower total PFS scores and reduced scores across behavioral, emotional, sensory, and cognitive dimensions compared to the control group (P < 0.01). The observation group also demonstrated significantly lower scores for fatigue, shortness of breath, lethargy, limb heaviness, and lower back/knee soreness (P < 0.01). Additionally, the observation group exhibited significantly higher scores for physical function, role function, emotional function, and social functioning on the EORTC QLQ-C30 scale (P < 0.01), while showing significantly lower fatigue symptom scores (P < 0.01). No statistically significant difference was observed in adverse reaction incidence between groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Herbal decoction effectively alleviates cancer-related fatigue in chemotherapy patients with colorectal malignancies, improves clinical symptoms through traditional Chinese medicine approaches, enhances quality of life, and demonstrates good safety profiles.

Refractory plantar warts, characterized by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plantar hyperkeratosis, demonstrate high recurrence rates with conventional treatments. This study investigates the synergistic mechanisms of fire needle therapy combined with Chinese herbal foot bath through a representative case analysis. A 27-year-old male patient with a 6-year disease history, having failed multiple treatments including liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, laser therapy and so on, received fire needle therapy combined with Chinese herbal foot bath treatment. The results demonstrated complete resolution of the warts after 4 treatment sessions, with no recurrence observed during the 6-month follow-up period. The study demonstrates that fire needle therapy achieves viral inactivation through high-temperature exposure, induces apoptosis of HPV-infected cells, and releases antigens to activate local immune responses, while the Chinese herbal foot bath enhances antiviral effects and immune regulation through transdermal absorption, concurrently improving microcirculation. The combined therapeutic modality establishes a synergistic “rapid debridement-sustained drug permeation-immune activation” mechanism, with thermal effects promoting capillary dilation and optimizing drug permeability efficiency. This study proposes an integrated Chinese-Western medicine protocol for refractory plantar warts, characterized by straightforward operation, cost-effectiveness, and safety, demonstrating particular suitability for implementation in primary healthcare settings.

Abstract: Background: Antibiotics have been used routinely for postoperative care in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, increased bacterial growth was found after antibiotic treatment. In traditional Chinese medicine, Jia Wei Cang Er San has been used to treat CRS. This study was to investigate the influence of Jia Wei Cang Er San on the postoperative bacteriology of CRS. Methods: Ninety-seven CRS patients who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) were included. They were randomly divided into 3 groups. In the group of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), patients were given a capsule of Jia Wei Cang Er San tid for 8 weeks and a placebo capsule for amoxicillin q8h for 4 weeks after FESS. In the amoxicillin group, patients were given a capsule of amoxicillin 250 mg q8h for 4 weeks and a placebo capsule for Jia Wei Cang Er San tid for 8 weeks. In the placebo group, patients were given both placebo capsules. Bacterial cultures were performed from bilateral middle meati before FESS, and 8 and 12 weeks after FESS. Results: In the CHM group, bacteria grew in 21 (46%) of 46 specimens pre-operatively, in 23 (50%) specimens 8 weeks and in 17 (37%) specimens 12 weeks after surgery. In the amoxicillin group, bacteria grew in 15 (28%) of 54 specimens pre-operatively, in 30 (56%) specimens 8 weeks and in 32 (59%) specimens 12 weeks after surgery. In the placebo group, bacteria were found in 13 (34%) of 38 specimens pre-operatively, in 16 (42%) specimens 8 weeks and in 12 (32%) specimens 12 weeks after surgery. The rates of bacterial growth did not change by Jia Wei Cang Er San 8 or 12 weeks after surgery, but increased significantly by amoxicillin 8 and 12 weeks after surgery. Conclusion: Our study showed that Jia Wei Cang Er San did not induce bacterial growth after FESS as amoxicillin.

Abstract:

Obesity represents a social health problem worldwide, associated with serious health risks and increased mortality. The prevalence of obesity is reported to be increasing in both developed and developing countries. Obesity is associated with a significant range of comorbidities and is linked with increases in mortality, thus the treatment of obesity is very important. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been used for weight management both in China and in western countries for many years, the effectiveness and safety of CHMs in obesity have been proved. Yet the principles of treating obesity with CHMs are hard to manage due to the complexity of TCM theory. In this study, a novel text mining method was developed based on a comprehensive collection of literatures in order to explore the treatment principles more intuitively. Networks of TCM patterns and CHMs which are most frequently used in obesity treatment are built-up and analyzed, two major principles are explored in treating obesity: one is resolving phlegm and dampness, the other is clearing heat and reinforcing deficiency. These findings might guide the clinicians in treatment of obesity.

Abstract:

A large number of Chinese herbal drugs (CHDs) exhibit antibacterial activities both in vivo and in vitro, but until now little is known regarding their inhibitory mechanisms. Bacterial DNA gyrase is a proven target for antibacterial agents. Aim of this study was to investigate the in-vitro inhibitory effect of methanol extracts of CHDs against supercoiling activity of bacterial DNA gyrase. Fifteen CHDs were selected and extracted with methanol, respectively. Inhibitory effect of the extracts on DNA gyrase was tested using gel-based DNA supercoiling assay. Among fifteen CHDs tested, methanol extracts of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (S2), Taraxaci Herba (S7), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (S8) demonstrated an obvious inhibitory effect against supercoiling activity of DNA gyrase, and the others were either less active or could not be determined with the present method. Moreover, it was likely that S7 and S8 inhibit gyrase in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, DNA supercoiling assay is a promising method to study the inhibitory activity of CHDs on bacterial DNA gyrase. Some CHDs do have gyrase-inhibitory activity as proposed. Further investigations are needed to elucidate the inhibition mechanism of these CHDs on supercoiling activity of gyrase.

Abstract: To observe the safety and effectiveness of a topical herbal agent used to promote fracture healing, a herbal patch containing extracts of three herbs, viz., Flos Carthami, Radix Dipsaci, Rhizoma Rhei and Borneolum Syntheticum (an enhancer) was applied on ten subjects with un-displaced fifth metatarsal fractures. Pain scores, foot and ankle function questionnaires and regional swelling were carefully assessed and recorded. Peripheral blood was taken to measure the inflammation cytokines. Assessment checks were performed biweekly to enforce effective patch application and compliance. The results showed that pain improved after two weeks and fracture sites swelling had 20% reduction in thickness when measured with an ultrasonic tool. Foot and ankle functional scores markedly improved after six weeks. Radiological examinations revealed early perfect fracture unions. The topical herbal patch was effective in promoting fracture healing. It was well tolerated by the fracture patients. Larger randomized controlled trials would be indicated.
