Abstract: Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) strongly influences light penetration and biogeochemical processes in inland waters. This study investigates the role of optical control exerted by CDOM on phytoplankton primary production in thirteen urban lakes of Yamoussoukro (C?te d’Ivoire), spanning a wide absorption gradient (a355 = 0.01 - 1.90 m?1). A total of 117 water samples were collected during four monthly campaigns (July-October) with 2 to 3 sampling stations per lake according to lake size and anthropogenic influence. In situ bio-optical measurements, dissolved nutrient analyses, and primary production estimates were combined with nonlinear mixed-effects statistical models accounting for the nested data structure (lake × campaign) and controlling for environmental covariates. The results reveal a significant unimodal relationship between CDOM and primary production (marginal R2 = 0.61; p < 0.01), further supported by a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM; conditional R2 = 0.72). Segmented regression identified a critical optical threshold at a355 ≈ 0.42 m?1 (95% bootstrap CI: 0.31 - 0.53), beyond which light attenuation becomes the dominant limiting factor, leading to a significant decline in productivity. Sensitivity analysis on photosynthetic parameters (±20% to 50%) and independent decoupling tests (constant Kd, direct Chl-a correlation) confirmed that this relationship is not an artefact of the modeling framework. These findings demonstrate that CDOM acts as a nonlinear optical regulator structuring the trophic dynamics of tropical urban lakes and provide a mechanistic framework for their ecological monitoring.
Trade Openness and Democracy: The Case of Gabon  [PDF]

Modern Economy (ME) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/me.2017.82013
Abstract: This article analyzes the relation between trade openness and democracy in Gabon. Unlike traditional approaches based on the estimation of linear gravity models, we first estimate a nonlinear model characterizing the relation between democracy and trade openness. We then determine an optimal threshold beyond which democracy has a positive effect on trade openness in Gabon.
Corruption and Economic Growth: The Case of EMCCA  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2017.75088
Abstract: This article analyzes the relationship between corruption and economic growth in the countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (EMCCA). To our knowledge, there are no works dealing with the direct relations between the two variables in such a framework. For this purpose, we use panel data econometrics to show that over the period 2005 to 2015, corruption has favored economic growth in the CEMAC member countries by “grazing” the administrative burdens that impede access basic public services (water, electricity, public hospitals and public schools), the creation and development of private enterprises.
Economic Modeling of the Behavior of Revival Churches in a Static Setting  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2020, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2020.105062
Abstract: This article is a contribution to the growing literature on the economics of religion. Indeed, to our knowledge, there is no study aimed at explaining the behavior of a revival church from a theoretical model. More precisely, we consider a household which, to maximize its usefulness, claims to be inhabited by the Holy Spirit, becomes a pastor and transforms its habitat into a church. He allocates his time in such a way as to attract and maintain faithful who, born again, offer their work in religious activity and/or make financial contributions. We show that the behavior of revival or awakened churches (Evangelical, Pentecostal, neo-Pentecostal, charismatic or prophetic) is fundamentally determined by the economic context: the level of employability, on the one hand, and the gap between the salary outside the church habitat and the internal salary fixed by the household-pastor to remunerate religious activity, on the other hand. In addition, we argue that in Africa, Revival Churches officiate in a context of unemployment and employ the maximum number of faithful in church activities and improvement. In return, they receive a remuneration lower than that of the labor market (case 4).
International Crises, Characterization of Contagion and Social Well-Being in Developing Countries: A Theoretical Model  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2014.41011
Abstract:

This paper has two objectives: to characterize the exposure of developing countries to the international income, prices and monetary shocks and to calculate the social well-being in the period of contagion. Firstly, we develop a theoretical model with a world composed of two countries (developed and developing countries) and measure the level of the exposure of income in developing country to the external shocks trough external trade, international tourism, migrant transfers, external debt, foreign aid, FDI and other private financial flow channels. And, we characterize imported inflation in studying the effect of the international shocks on real exchange rate. Secondly, we search the social well-being. The results suggest that economic disequilibrium in developing country is socially optimal and that the dependence of its income to the domestic industry is necessary to reduce contagion. This conclusion is important for African countries because they import finished products for the households’ consumption. In these conditions, they are exposed to the imported inflation. The domestic monetary and tax policies are not adapted to fight against inflation. Also, they produce and export raw materials essentially toward industrialized economies. Thus, they must develop the domestic industry in order to influence the demand (or prices) of raw materials and to substitute imports by domestic goods in period of hyper-inflation in advanced economies in order to reduce imported inflation.

Abstract: Photo-Electric Microbe Sensor is a patented biotechnology that detects microbes in aqueous solution by measuring the change in photo-voltage in response to UV light stimulation of a platinum (Pt) disk surface on an electrode before and after immunoprecipitation of microbes. This study aimed to increase the sensitivity of microbe detection by pre-adsorbing recombinant Streptococcal Protein G (PG), to the Pt sensor surface. Streptococcal PG binds the Fc region of mammalian IgG molecules and we investigated the association of PG to Pt and the resulting ability to tether antibodies to the Pt-PG surface. An ELISA protocol was optimized to detect the presence of mouse monoclonal antibodies tethered to Pt immunoaffinity disks, and to determine the recommended blocking solution and reagent concentrations. Our results demonstrate that PG binds to bare Pt, increases IgG affinity to the Pt surface following Superblock Buffer application, and together offers design-options for Pt-based sensor technologies.
Biological effectiveness on live cells of laser driven protons at dose rates exceeding 109 Gy/s

AIP Advances , 2012, DOI: 10.1063/1.3699063
Abstract: The ultrashort duration of laser-driven multi-MeV ion bursts offers the possibility of radiobiological studies at extremely high dose rates. Employing the TARANIS Terawatt laser at Queen's University, the effect of proton irradiation at MeV-range energies on live cells has been investigated at dose rates exceeding 109 Gy/s as a single exposure. A clonogenic assay showed consistent lethal effects on V-79 live cells, which, even at these dose rates, appear to be in line with previously published results employing conventional sources. A Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) of 1.4±0.2 at 10% survival is estimated from a comparison with a 225 kVp X-ray source.
Quality of life in systemic lupus erythematosus

Reumatismo , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/reumatismo.2001.108
Abstract: The SF-20 and the SF-36 are the most frequently used questionnaires for assessing the quality of life in SLE patients. The SF-36 is actually considered the most suitable for this disease, due to the inclusion of fatigue, a manifestation frequently observed in SLE patients. Using these instruments, it has been clearly demonstrated that patients with SLE have a worse quality of life than healthy people of the same age. Some aspects of daily life, like physical activity, job, social relationship and vitality, are particularly affected. In the majority of studies, an inverse relation between quality of life and disease activity has been observed. The influence the damage has on the quality of life is more complex, since a greater number of variables are involved. In fact, the amount of damage largely depends on the organ involved and on functional impairment resulting from it. To explain the variability in the quality of life among different patients, it is important to consider, besides the clinical complaints, the psycho-social dimension of each person. In fact, some SLE patients, unlike others, cope well with the disease. People behave differently when faced with critical situations, i.e. after being diagnosed with a chronic disease; their reaction depends on the degree of support they receive from family, friends and colleagues, and from the different strategies of coping, that they use.

Reumatismo , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/reumatismo.2002.324
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the reliability of the immunoblot method in the detection of serum immunoreactivity towards the B/B’ polypeptides of U small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (UsnRNP) and to assess the significance of these antibodies in connective tissue disease (CTD) patients. Methods: We tested the sera of 348 patients with CTD (101 SLE, 51 systemic sclerosis, 53 primary Sjogren’s syndrome, 27 poly/dermatomyositis, 15 rheumatoid arthritis and 101 overlap CTD), of 31 matched healthy subjects and 13 patients with primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection with high titre IgG anti-EBV antibodies. IgG anti-UsnRNP antibodies were determined by immunoblotting on nuclear extract from Raji cells (an EBV-immortalised human B lymphoid cell line) and Jurkat cells (a human T lymphoid cell line). Anti-dsDNA antibodies were detected by indirect immunofluorescence on Crithidia luciliae and anti-ENA by counterimmunoelectrophoresis. Anti-dsDNA activity and avidity were measured in SLE sera by ELISA with Scatchard analysis. Results were statistically analysed by chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: A high frequency of anti-B/B’ antibodies was found in the sera of CTD patients, confined to SLE (54.4%) and overlap CTD with SLE features (55,2%). Anti-B/B’ immune reactivity was closely associated with other anti-UsnRNP specificities, gel precipitating anti-nRNP and anti-P antibodies. Nine out of 15 (60%) anti-B/B’ positive/anti-ENA negative lupus sera on Raji blots were confirmed to be positive also on Jurkat blots. The sera from patients with EBV infection provided, on Raji blots, completely different band patterns from those obtained with auto-immune sera. Conclusions. The Sm B/B’ proteins are the predominant or, at least, the most frequently targeted antigens of the UsnRNP auto-immune response in SLE and “lupus-like” overlap CTD. Moreover, anti-B/B’ is diagnostically specific for CTD with SLE features. Immunoblotting on human B lymphoid cells is a reliable method, in terms of sensitivity and specificity, for the detection of anti-Sm B/B’ antibodies.
Matching fields of a long superconducting film

Physics , 1999, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.60.13158
Abstract: We obtain the vortex configurations, the matching fields and the magnetization of a superconducting film with a finite cross section. The applied magnetic field is normal to this cross section, and we use London theory to calculate many of its properties, such as the local magnetic field, the free energy and the induction for the mixed state. Thus previous similar theoretical works, done for an infinitely long superconducting film, are recovered here, in the special limit of a very long cross section.
