Abstract:

This paper develops a transient simulation model based on the finite difference method to analyze the steady-state and transient characteristics of the world first flue gas–molten salt thermal storage system. At rated conditions, steady-state temperatures are 301.46?C, 388.82?C, and 317.05?C for the flue gas outlet, molten salt outlet, and average heat exchange tubes bundle, respectively. Using the rated flue gas flow, startup preheating to the target temperatures requires 279.9 s for thermal storage and 812.6 s for thermal preservation. During shutdown, cooling to 200?C takes 59.8 h (thermal storage) and 101.3 h (thermal preservation); cooling further to 25?C requires 588.8 h and 736.0 h, respectively. This work provides theoretical and practical guidance for the design and operation of such systems.
