NEOLOGíA LéXICA: REFLEJO DE LA VITALIDAD DEL ESPA？OL DE CHILE

the present article shows the results from a study conducted by the antena chilena de neología (chilean neology research group) which is member of the antenas neológicas belonging to the neology observatory of the iula (university institute of applied linguistics) of the universitat pompeu fabra, barcelona. the study consisted of detecting, compiling, analyzing, and classifying neologisms extracted from el mercurio and el sur, newspapers of national and local circulation, respectively, between 2003 and 2006. this article presents the linguistic criteria used to define the new coinages and to categorize the neological units collected. additionally, it contains an analysis of the productivity of the different ways in which lexical items are created, a phenomenon that evidences the vitality of the chilean variety of spanish.
