Abstract:

the aim of this paper is to provide new data regarding the knowledge of the hispanic grammatical tradition, and more specifically of the history of school grammars in the hispanic american environment, still not so well known as those in the spanish one. for this purpose, we focus on manuel m. salazar's handbook of castilian grammar, a further instance of school handbook which was intended for intermediate education institutions in peru. this text must have been widely read in its time, at least in this country, judging by the high number of editions that were published (here we handle the seventh edition, an expanded and corrected version, published in lima in 1871). we will approach here an analysis of its contents, method, organization, sources, intertextual relations with other grammars, and like issues, to then look into the political, social and educational context. thereby, we will provide a general outline of the history of school grammars in peru, while improving our knowledge of the rich hispanic school tradition. it is worth considering the content of this grammar, since the text combines conservative standard theories (real academia espa?ola) with more advanced proposals, such as those from the philosophical french grammar (port-royal, du marsais, condillac, destutt, etc). due to its relevance, this first approach will henceforth require to be complemented with new investigations on the peruvian scholar tradition.
