Abstract:

in this study we investigate the meaning attributed to school by students. this is a participatory research, with field investigation, interviews and diversified activities, with students of public school from 10 to 13 years, in fundamental education. we conducted our study within a non-formal educational context in a peripheral community in s?o paulo. by using the qualitative analysis it was possible to build up signification nuclei related to a general overview of the school, such as: purpose of the school; school routine; institutional agents; social conditions; parents; society and so on. the results show that school is important as it provides the students with a prospect for a dignified future. however, it reflects an everyday non-satisfying learning, meaningless classes; lack of classes; disrespectful interpersonal relationships; perception of public disinterest; feeling of tiredness lived by teachers and students. this study confirms that, although valued socially, the school shows difficulties fulfilling its role, according to student's perception.
