Abstract: this paper analyzes the difficult relationship between phonetics and phonology. the former was considered the model of linguistic research, thanks to the foundation of the international phonetic association and other factors at the end of the 19th century. this situation changed with the creation of the prague linguistic circle in the 1930s, which brought about a distancing from naturalistic descriptions and explanations. thus, phonetics was virtually excluded as a linguistic discipline, by american phonologists as well. the ?classic? generative model of chomsky and halle (1968) represented the peak of abstractionism and formalism, but at the same time it caused a negative reaction in the seventies whose aim was to minimize them. since then a gradual return to phonetics has taken place. the reasons for this strain in the relationship of the two disciplines are analyzed and explained here. strategies are suggested for the training of phoneticians within the framework of taxonomic phonetics in contrast to a ?scientific? orientation. controversial aspects of the taxonomic type are examined and solutions are indicated.
