Abstract:

the "popular" matter doesn't find an unequivocal definition because it represents a complex reality and accepts different perspectives. there are different ways and means about the popular question and economy. the main objective of this article is to recover the urban informal sector (uis) concept's use -in some latin american perspectives- as popular economy. i'll analyze this theoretical vision and the politics that emerge from it, as formulated by different authors. i'll describe a state of the arts of the popular economy concept's formulation and use in latin american current thought. four authors will be analysed: javier iguí?iz (perú), fernando villarán (perú), diego palma (chile) y josé coraggio (argentina). although i propose a perspective in and about contemporary latin america, the theme is not new. for example, a great part of eighteenth-century social history may be read as successive confrontations between a newly market economy and the people's usual moral economy. in this battles, formations and class conscience are prefigurated. the people's culture belongs to the people: it's a defensive act against the gentry or the clergy intrusions, and it consolidates the costumes that serve the people's own interests; the taverns are theirs, the markets are theirs, and they have their own regulation ways.
