El problema hospitalario en Valencia a finales del siglo XV: Dos cartas al inquisidor Torquemada

the municipal government of valencia was the author of an initiative in 1482, to build a general hospital where all the smaller healthcare establishments would be absorbed. these disperse and inefficient hospitals would so fall under this government's control. five years later, the project was not yet started. to give some momentum to the paralyzed project, the local authorities suggested in 1487 that ferdinand ii devoted to this purpose the money collected through economic fines imposed by the town inquisition. in order to achieve this aim, they unsuccessfully sought fray tomás de torquemada's support, who was later addressed by the same authorities in 1488. this time, they wanted him to allow the appointment of jaume gombau, a merchant "penitenciado" by the tribunal, as administrator of the hospital de la reina.
