Abstract:

human populations differ among them in terms of auxologic standards. these differences are due to a wide range of environmental and genetic factors. the province of jujuy (argentina) shows physiographical differences that condition intraprovincial dissimilarities in human settlements to their cultural and biological patterns and geographic altitude. this paper analyzes the main results obtained through various studies carried out under the "native populations of the argentine northern area: genetic and bioanthropological aspects program". this program is based on auxologic characteristics of child juje?o populations and their relationship to the geographic altitude factor. data on height and weight proceed from our own surveys and those provided by other institutions. age groups under analysis range from 6-months to 12-year-olds. based on this information and divided into groups by sex, age and residence area (puna, quebrada, valle, and ramal), the two anthropometric standards of height/age (h/a) and weight/age (w/a) were analyzed. interregional and interpopulational comparisons using the national standard allow for the differential regional pattern found in child growth of juje?o populations, which are strongly conditioned by geographical altitude. consideration of additional anthropometric standards became essential to further knowledge on this differential pattern and to corroborate its relevance.
