this paper establishes the importance of merchants in salta during the nineteenth century. in addition to examine the behavior of traders in the merchant court, the political and legal powers of the merchants are analyzed. after 1852, merchant power increased significantly, as seen by their participation in the provincial government as occupiers of the executive branch.
