the possibility of analyzing complex issues such as those dealing with social, economic and symbolical variables is directly related to the amount of reliable nominal information that is available. models may be useful in order to produce hypothesis but they are no substitute for the contrasting of these or for the data required for the analysis.in short, and as previously stated in repeated occasions, desk speculations cannot replace fieldwork and latter laboratory analysis; both must be completely integrated moments of the research process. the collected data so far has allowed us to formulate a hypothesis that sustains that already in the formative period or early period, the complexing process of agricultural/pastoral societies of the argentine nw began, with two developmental poles that were located first at the ceremonial centers in the valley of tafí (province of tucumán), and later at the campo de pucará (province of catamarca). during what has become known as the regional integration or medium period, the development pole was moved to the ambato valley in the province of catamarca. the formative ceremonial centers to which we referred acted as incipient centers of power, administration and coordination over ample regions of the argentine nw. the socio-political and religious basis, which started to form in the formative period, were instituted and consolidated during the late period. the information recovered these past years during field expeditions tends to ratify the hypothesis that was initially presented.
