Abstract: the theoretical approach of this paper concerns the imperial expansion of the tawantinsuyu in caspana-loa river highlands. we are particularly interested on the statu priorities, strategics, and the stages of its social enlargement. we studied a wide variety of inka sites and cultural materials derived from archaeological, ethnohistoric and ethnographic sources of data. the results allow us to criticize the current models to understand inka's political economy organization, specially the ecological and economic complementary model. our analyzis departures from a marxism paradigm and historic materialism to support the idea that andean complementarity was a social structure first with a secondary economic function. we suggest that this strategy was a great inka political tool that enhanced the local social contradictions, as shown at the atacama desert
