ARQUEOLOGíA Y CAMBIO SOCIAL: UNA VISIóN DE GéNERO Y MATERIALISMO HISTóRICO PARA EL NORTE DE CHILEDOI: 10.4067/S0717-73562004000300045 Keywords: social archaeology, hunters gatherers, agricultural revolution, historical materialism, social change, genre, north of chile. Abstract: in this essay historical materialism is considered an effective theory in the interpretation of cultural changing processes; particularly for the prehistory of northen chile, including concepts of the gender. even though there has been certain concern of the role of woman in history, especially in moments of crisis, most of the interpretations have a patriarchal or masculine view. this possition has prevented a better knowledge of the social problems and the role of gender in the social relation of production. the patriarchalism is found in all societies, and for this issue we have sought alternatives based on scientific reflection that value the role of women on social changes. this allows us to consider variables that scape from the sanctification of rationality as we consider the emotional aspects of human beings or the humanization of science
