Abstract:

this text presents some results from a research conducted to understand the history of the "carlos gomes teacher training college", in campinas (sp, brazil). it resorts to memories and documents published by the local press on the importance of the creation of the first public institution designed to train first grades teachers. the developments of a force correlation involving politicians and intellectuals, between 1901 and 1903, were reported in the press. this was intended to give information not only the institutional and bureaucratic norms, but also on the symbols, values and pedagogical aspects that accompanied the expansion of education. it then analyzes the relations between the press and the society in the process that led to create the "carlos gomes teacher training college", whose model and tradition expressed the logic of a welfare state consolidating the right to expand teaching to the population of campinas.
