lecture in the department of education and pedagogical standards of the state of s？o paulo (cenp/sp) in 1985 at the height of a campaign for inclusion of the discipline sociology in the brazilian curriculum. this is a historical record of a teacher's participation in this debate. in this text the author stresses the important role of sociology in school, allowing students to question and think up new possibilities of living in society.
