this paper analyzes a particular way of the criminalization of social protest: the police understandings of piqueteros in argentina. from c. schmitt's classic approach to the figure of partisan, and through the conversations with police officers, internal documentation from security agencies and the observation of police work; i identify dominant characteristics and presuppositions underlying police conceptualizations about specific public demonstrations subjects and protest actions. thus, i offer a reconstruction of the police understanding of these protesters with important levels of recurrence and consistency. special attention is made to direct and indirect references to piqueteros as "irregular armies" and "combats against partisans", as salient aspects in police thought
