el vasto mar de los sargazos (1966) was written by jean rhys as a textual response to the english romantic novel jane eyre of charlotte bront？ (1847); a motivation to show the ？criollo side？ in front of the ？english side？ results evident. to do so, jean rhys assigns a cultural, historic, geographic and social voice and location to antoinette (rochester？s lunatic wife in bront？？s novel) in order to describe the ？criollo side？ as she stands for the representation of this side of the world. rochester continues to be the voice and the representation of the english world. studying the system of representation of both visions of the world (that of the empire and that of the colonized) is the main aim of this work. it is not only an attempt to present and analyze the set of views and representations of the world to which each character belongs, but also to account for the construction and elaboration of a representation of the other. these systems of representation become decisive elements that allow hegemony and the perpetuation of dominance over the other.
