Sor Juana y el siglo XIX: notas sobre el estudio de Juan María GutiérrezKeywords: literary critique, juan maría gutiérrez, romanticism, generation of '37, sor juana inés de la cruz. Abstract: this article studies the ideological-discursive strategies displayed by juan maría gutiérrez in his essay about the life and work of sor juana inés de la cruz. it analyses a 19th century critic's interpretation of the greatest poet in new spain, that is, a supporter of the pro-independence creed (and thus profoundly anti-hispanic) criticizing a colonial writer. ultimately, it seeks to elucidate how romanticism from the river plate area takes on the conflictive inheritance of viceroyalty and how gutiérrez's essay fits into the debate around the incorporation of the americas in the concert of occidental culture.
