the article analyses the vita of an english mystic born shortly after the norman conquest of anglo-saxon england. therefore the article is divided into two sections, the first one devoted to historical points and the second one to spiritual ones. the first section stresses the fact that in the vita the anglo-saxons are pictured positively as opposed to the normans who are called "strangers" and portrayed negatively. in the same section interesting information about society in general and family structures in particular is examined. in the second section the author studies the phases of the mystic's religious vocation and spiritual perfection. the detailed account of these includes all the typical topoi of mystics' biographies in general. in short, the vita is an important document for a better understanding of post-norman england.
