based on teaching experience of visual anthropology theory and practice, the individual learning process of film technique is compared with the development of visual anthropology as an academic discipline. the experimentation of the up-and-coming anthropologist-filmmaker with cinematographic language turns out to be a process fairly independent of prior theoretical knowledge and seems to follow intuitively the pathways pursued by the discipline？s founding fathers.
