Selvagens, exóticos, demoníacos: idéias e imagens sobre uma gente de cor preta

in the occidental culture the black color is associated either to an exotic fascination feeling, or to a sensation of fear or horror. the intention here is to show whatever has permitted these images to be formed even before a race speech has began (in the 19th century) and to verify its importance and influence related to a racist ideology. besides, we want to think how the relation between black/color is completely bonded to a black person, so that what is visible defines entirely the conception of "being negro". to us, the path of this imagery construction is mixed with an esthetic elaboration and with philosophies, which have defined the negroes and africa as exotic, strange, evil and scary and therefore permitted a justified and a naturalized thought of the negro as inferior and servile.
