Abstract: this paper, primarily, addresses the approximately 600 codex style sherds recovered during the calakmul archaeological project. these sherds make up a minimum of 86 vessels. the majority of these come from archaeological contexts associated with the palace structure known as structure xx in the great acropolis, where important social and political events took place among maya aristocracy. paste chemical analysis of codex style ceramics have resulted in several divisions. nevertheless it was proposed that they formed an homogeneous group, with one focus of production, el mirador basin. new discoveries in calakmul permit us to question the premise of a single origin for this style. while new comparative data is generated from paste characterization of chemical fingerprints, we propose an analysis based on concepts of ceramic modes and the type-variety system.
