Abstract:

outstanding wheat (triticum aestivum l.) genotypes selection based on grain yield is, and will continue to be, an important strategy in crop breeding and crop production technology. in this study 20 genotypes from international maize and wheat improvement center were evaluated to identify the most outstanding ones on grain yield and yield components. these genotypes were evaluated in four environments resulting from two locations each one cultivated with and no irrigation, at toluca valley, mexico. the experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. results indicated highly significant (p<0.01) differences in all evaluated variables among environments (a) and genotypes (g). a highly significant interaction axg was detected in days to flowering (daf), plant height (ap), weight of 1 000 grains (pmg), grain hectolitric weight (phg) and grain yield (rgh). statistical analysis showed that principal components 1 (31.3%) and 2 (23.9%) explained 55.2% of total variation of original variables; spikes per square meter (emc), daf, pmg; spike length (le), spikelets per spike (ee) and rgh explained most of observed variability. outstanding genotypes were those identified as 3, 7, 18, 8, 17, 12, 4 and 2, that resulted in highest rgh (2 533, 2 465, 2 422, 2 389, 2 287, 2 284, 2 253, 2 113 kg ha-1, respectively) and also showed high values on le, ee y phg. as a result of this research, these genotypes are recommended for rainfed condition in this study area.
