Abstract:

this paper seeks to interpret the theological meaning of the biblical terms "flesh" and "carnality," showing their ambivalent nature which results from the fact that they are terms coupled with both negative and positive connotations. the author tries to show that the former come from a partial interpretation of paul's thought which, under the later influence of hellenism, was prone to be incorporated in christian thought, while the latter imply that carnality is nothing less than god's method for revealing himself in the historical person of jesus, "the word made flesh," and also implies a need for rehabilitating the body and human sexuality, and for considering carnality as a presupposition to secularization, as it was brought forward by hegel's philosophy and dialectical theology, in which barth, gogarten bultmann and bonhoeffer were some of its most remarkable exponents.
