objectives: to verify the event of pregancy, and to describe women's planning and desire of having a child. methods: this study used a descriptive, exploratory qualitative design. the sample consisted of 12 women from a well respect prenatal service who had a high risk pregnancy. data were collected through semi-structured interviews. results: the main central themes have emerged: desired but not planned pregnancy and associated to either to non-use or incorrect use of contraceptive methods; desired but not planned pregnancy associated with religious beliefs; desired planned pregnancy; and, not desired nor planned pregnancy. conclusions: prior to identification of the main central ideas, it was observed the need of health education, specifically related to the reproductive health.
