the university considered as a generating-knowledge center in the teaching process at undergraduate and postgraduate studies carries out extramural research. this paper assesses the evolution of the academic thinking about housing, based on theoretical and methodological approaches used at havana school of architecture during the last thirty years. the theoretical and empirical research results show that the university has always been involved in the solution of the housing problem; allow to assess the evolution of thinking in relation to the international trends, confirm the leading role of the university at all times, and demonstrate the slowness in the application of the new knowledge to the social practice.
