Abstract:

summary the incidence of the venezuelan strain of the maize dwarf mosaic virus (mdmv-v) has increased since 1970 in experimental and commercial fields of sorghum (sorghum bicolor) and maize (zea mays). mdmv-v is the most important virus in venezuela?s maize areas, with a high incidence. the aim of this study was to determine the mode of inheritance of the resistance to mdmv-v and the relative importance of the genetic effects in a set of maize inbred lines. the resistant inbreeds cml-49, cml-161 and cml-264 were crossed with the susceptible cml-247 and the corresponding f2 populations and backcrosses to the susceptible and resistant parents were obtained. all generations were evaluated in a randomized complete-block design with four replications. the experimental unit consisted of 50 plants for the susceptible and resistant parent and the f1 generation, 100 plants for backcrosses, and 400 plants for the f2 generations. the genetic analysis of resistance based on one or two genes did not fit the segregating ratios observed in the f2 and backcross populations, suggesting a more complex inheritance mode for resistance to the mdmv-v. the analysis of generation means revealed that genetic variation for virus resistance was best explained by an additive-dominant model, where the additive effects were the most important ones
