This paper is a review article, aiming to sort out and summarize the clinical experience of treating vitiligo with internal therapy in the field of traditional Chinese medicine in the 20th century. The article first reviews the understanding of vitiligo in ancient Chinese medical books and elaborates on the evolution process of its disease name, etiology and pathogenesis. Subsequently, the core part of the article elaborately sorted out the treatment ideas of the famous and veteran traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in the 20th century, summarizing them into different schools of treatment based on different pathogenesis such as “rheumatism”, “internal fire”, and “blood stasis”, and introduced a comprehensive treatment method centered on “nourishing the liver and kidneys and harmonizing qi and blood”, listing the prescriptions and experiences of representative medical practitioners. Finally, the article briefly mentions the current situation where traditional Chinese medicine is trending towards standardization and normalization in the diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo in the 21st century, and cites the latest consensus on diagnosis and treatment as a reference. The article holds that in clinical practice, the principle of syndrome differentiation and treatment should be followed to combine internal treatment with external treatment in order to enhance the therapeutic effect.
