Language Power and Local Identity—The Value of Cantonese Practice in Lin Bai’s “Beiliu”

本文以林白的长篇小说《北流》中的粤语实践为中心，探讨了方言文学在突破语言权力结构与重构地方文化认同中的双重价值。本文聚焦《北流》对勾漏粤语的创造性运用，通过文本细读与文化分析相结合的方法，揭示其如何借助方言特有的表意系统与审美特征，实现语言等级制度的双重突破。在语言权力的层面，《北流》不仅突破了以普通话为主导的层级秩序，通过勾漏粤语的在地性表达重建南方的话语场域，还以勾漏粤语与广府粤语的混杂使用，尝试瓦解粤语内部的正宗的使用规范。在重构地方文化认同的方面，《北流》通过激活地方经验与集体记忆，构建出了超越地域局限的共同想象。小说中的粤语方言实践超越了文学技巧的范畴，它不仅是地域特色的展现，更是对文化自主诉求的深刻表达。
Centered on the Cantonese practice in Lin Bai’s novel “Beiliu”, this paper explores the dual value of dialect literature in breaking through the language power structure and reconstructing local cultural identity. This article focuses on the creative application of Goulou Cantonese in “Beiliu”. Through the method combining close text reading and cultural analysis, it reveals how it achieves a dual breakthrough in the language hierarchy system by leveraging the unique ideographic system and aesthetic characteristics of dialects. At the level of language power, “Beiliu” not only breaks through the hierarchical order dominated by Mandarin, but also reconstructs the discourse field in the south by using the local expression of Goulou Cantonese. Moreover, it attempts to dismantle the authentic usage norms within Cantonese by using the mixed use of Goulou Cantonese and Guangfu Cantonese. In terms of reconstructing local cultural identity, “Beiliu” has constructed a common imagination that transcends regional limitations by activating local experiences and collective memories. The practice of the Cantonese dialect in the novel transcends the realm of literary techniques. It is not only a display of regional characteristics but also a profound expression of the demand for cultural autonomy.
