Abstract:

This paper presents the Brazilian geothermal potential for electricity generation. The main areas of hot springs are presented as a guideline for future evaluation of electricity generation from geothermal reservoirs. Locations of wells with the main anomalously high geothermal gradients identified from an inventory of 6200 wells are presented, along with heat flow measurements and their site geology detailed to provide a basis for further development. The availability of water supplies at each potential site is also presented. Data on the geothermal gradient of each site, as well as geothermal flux and thermal conductivity are provided. Economic, logistical and other factors are also considered to show the feasibility of a geothermal power project in Brazil. In addition, the potential of geothermal energy and the different techniques for exploiting geothermal energy are presented to show how the Brazilian potential can be exploited. The report shows that there are 40 potential sites for geothermal power plants in all regions of the country. This report indicates that it is possible, with current technology, to generate geothermal power at depths of no more than 3 km in Brazil. The lack of familiarity with this type of project in the country, coupled with the numerous easily accessible sustainable energy sources in Brazil, presents a challenge for investors considering investing in this emerging form of power generation in the country.
