The Implications of Aristotle’s Theory of Friendship for Contemporary Civic Education

Aristotle has made an in-depth and comprehensive discussion on the idea of friendship, pointing out that friendship arises from rational and unselfish self-love, from the goodwill of reciprocating mutual knowledge, and from living together, and explaining the specific connotations of friendship at the individual level and at the political level, as well as its different types. As a public ethic, friendship plays an important role in cultivating the moral quality of citizens and maintaining social harmony and national prosperity. In contemporary civic education, Aristotle’s theory of friendship is still of profound significance, inspiring us to enhance our sense of self-love and improve our moral qualities; to regulate family relations and cultivate family virtues; to strengthen our civic identity and build a community of destiny; and to adhere to the unity of morality and law to promote social harmony.
