|
Abstract:
Karen Horney’s anxiety theory suggests that parent-child conflicts often arise from hidden competition over resources, power, and identity. Parents want children to adopt their values, while children seek independence, creating latent hostility and competitive anxiety. In A Pale View of Hills, illustrates the tensions between maternal instincts and freedom, as well as generational gaps, through the parent-child conflicts faced by Etsuko and Mr. Ogata. Both characters adopt “detached” and “compliant” defensive strategies, respectively, yet neither resolves the underlying conflicts. The novel’s ending suggests self-awareness and empathy as keys to easing such conflicts, offering insights into reconciling parent-child relationships and reflecting Ishiguro’s exploration of these dynamics.
