Abstract:

In order to further explore the immediate and longitudinal associations and the internal mechanisms among college students’ self-body image, social anxiety and mobile phone social media dependence, a half-year longitudinal study was conducted on 484 college students. Results revealed that: (1) self-body image was significantly and negatively correlated with both T1 and T2 mobile phone social media dependence; (2) social anxiety played an immediate and longitudinal mediating role between self-body image and mobile phone social media dependence, with the mediating paths being T1 self-body image → T1 social anxiety → T1 mobile phone social media dependence, T1 self-body image → T1 social anxiety → T2 mobile phone social media dependence, and T1 self-body image → T2 social anxiety → T2 mobile phone social media dependence. The above results showed that the positive self-body image led to a decrease in college students’ social anxiety, which in turn further reduced mobile phone social media dependence, and the effect was stable across time. These findings provide valid evidence for alleviating social anxiety and mobile phone social media dependence among college students.
