Abstract:

In English language learning, students unavoidably experience negative influence from their native language, which is known as L1 negative transfer. This phenomenon is most visibly reflected in English writing. Choosing students from two classes of the ninth grade at a junior high school in Wanzhou as study members, using corpus analysis, guided by contrastive analysis theory and interlanguage theory, this study aims to analyze the negative transfer of pronouns in the English writing of junior high school students. The findings indicate that this negative transfer mainly manifests in 1) misuse between personal pronouns and possessive pronouns; 2) misuse between subject and object pronouns; 3) misuse between adjectival pronouns and pronominal possessives; 4) misuse of reflexive pronouns. Based on these manifestations of negative transfer, several teaching suggestions are proposed.
