The autobiographical novel Educated, A Memoir by American author Tara Westover tells the story of Tara’s journey from a mountain girl who had never stepped into a classroom before the age of 17 to a doctor at the University of Cambridge. Michel Foucault’s theories of discourse, power, and subjectivity provide theoretical foundation for analyzing Tara’s growth from ignorance to seeking knowledge and attaining knowledge, as well as for deeply exploring the intricate relationships and interactive logic among education, power, and the construction of subjectivity. Education is not merely the transmission of knowledge.
